Now I know why MichaelXi

Now I know why MichaelXi does so well at Auto-X. Its the roads he drives on every day. Just spent 3 days in Pigeon Forge on vacation. After we did the usual "tourist things", the wife and I drove about 400 miles around the back roads in the area looking at the scenery. At least the wife was looking at the scenery, I was busy looking at the roads! After watching WRC Corsica on Sunday night I told the wife that the roads they were on looked like Interstates compared to the local roads.

That's funny - after returning home (Pennsylvania) for a wedding a couple summers ago, I made this statement to my friends here in D-town:

"Now I know why I like rally so much - I grew up in Catalunya!"

I spent some quality time with my R on that trip and realized I had forgotten how much fun the roads were. The late-night trips back to college I made back then were great. There was a sign about 2.5 hours into the trip that said the distance was 26 miles to campus, and my goal was always 26 miles in 26 minutes. Doesn't sound like much if you live in the land of the superslab, but on 2-lane back roads in the hills of PA, it's another story.

western and central NY are much teh same way.

I've got the best times of anyone in my house, adn I did in a grand cherokee. (5000 pounds, two live axles, you do the math)

which reminds me, anyone who thinks unsprung weight isn't a big deal, drive a grand cherokee like it's a roadhugging SC on the backraods...quick lesson on why lightweight rims = sex
CTB, What part of PA are you talking about? I grew up in southwestern PA but, you have to go up to the north central part of PA to get roads to match those I was on in eastern TN.

I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, and I spent 4.5 years in State College getting edjumacated. Lots of good stuff if you know where to look, with heavy consequences for getting it wrong. Where did you grow up?

I've been on some roads in the Bay Area that were fantastic (head south from San Fran towards Alice's Restaurant (yes, that one) via the back roads), and I've seen friends' on-bike footage from Deal's Gap in the Carolinas (I think...). Both get even more tight and twisty than the stuff in PA. Good stuff!

Deal's Gap is 85% in TN.....
The very end is in NC.
There's a Motorcycle shop at THE Deal's Gap, just into NC, thus the name, but "The Dragon" AT Deal's Gap is mostly a TN run.

BTW, Hal,
Come visit me ANY Time, and we'll put you and the wife up for your stay and go for a few runs over the 318 turns in 11 miles, (Plus getting there....
).
Same for you CTB, P-51, DFL, Chris F, Penguini, Egz, or any other 'Jetters that I know well enough to have in my house as intelligent Human-Beings who love their Focus.

And thus my stance on why eliminating geography in schools was stupid.

Thanks, MXi. If I ever find myself in the area, I'll have to let you know. I never made it to the Gap when I had my bikes, but maybe someday I'll get there.

CTB, I grew up in Irwin. I commuted to college at California and spent a lot of weekends in Indiana, PA and State College on dates.

MichaelXi, I was planning on calling you when we were down last weekend but we had to cut our trip short by 2 days. I appreciate your offer of a place to stay but, we usually can get the use of my wife's sisters house on Birds Creek Rd about 5 miles from the entrance to Dollywood. Hope you can make it to VIR, I will be there the whole weekend
