Hi guys, just figured I would give you a heads up about a problem I recently encountered. The car had started to misfire under full boost. So we ran down the usual ignition stuff replaced the old ASZF22C plugs and also my beat up FocusSport wires with some new Bosch 8mm wires and a fresh set of plugs. Made a bit of a difference but the misfire was still there and started progressively getting worse. Turns out it was the coil slowly wearing out, guess it wasnt really designed to handle near twice ths stock horsepower for an extended amount of time. At the time of degradation to the point of it failing under boost the coil had about 30000 boosted miles on it (~50000 total on the car).

Anyhow the upgrade is pretty simple. You could buy one of those Screamin Demon things I guess but im not a big fan of marketing mumbo jumbo. MSD happens to make an upgraded 4 tower coil for the 4.6L Mustang that compatible with the Focus and is the exact same dimensions. The 4.6L modular motor being a V8 needs two of them however obviously we only need one. The catch is that the connections on the coil are not the same as the stock coil however they ARE the same as is used on the Escort/ZX2/SPI motors. So you simply go and buy yourself some nice 9mm Ford Motorsport wires for the ZX2 and you are good to go.

So to sum up:
MSD 4.6L Mustang coil: $80USD
Ford Motorsport 9mm ZX2 wires: $50USD

These were local prices too im sure you could probably knock at least $10 or $20 off each of them if you looked around a bit.

Problem solved. I am now considering testing out some wider spark plug gaps, currently the plugs are at 0.032" however I am thinking I may be able to increase that up to around 0.036" or maybe more.

PS: BTW the screaming demon coil looks AWFULLY like a MSD Mustang coil and the wires have the same connectors as the Escort/ZX2 wires I am using now and also look to be 9mm and pretty much identical to the Ford Motorsport ones. Co-incidence?

BTW here are some pictures of the Screamin Demon coil and wires since im about 99% sure they are rebadged MSD and Ford Motorsport parts with a markup. (they do it with the Dynabatt which is just a Hawker/Genesis battery so why not other stuff?)

Screamin Demon Coil:

MSD 4.6L Mustang Coil:

Screamin Demon Wires:

Ford Motorsport ZX2 Wires:

Scremin Demon Install: yellow = FAST!

Sorry no pics of the install on my car but I think you get the idea by now.

No install pics Chris come on or haven't you cleaned your engine yet
That should go in the old FJ thread those pictures of your aerocharger install but it was in the end 3 pages of comments on your dirty engine.

Clean car = go faster!

I encountered a similar miss. I started by changing the plugs (22c's). That didnt help so I ditched my cool blue JBA wires for a set of stock ones. Problem solved.

I just sent the wires off to JBA to get tested. If the results come back OK, do you think my coil is going? The car runs fine right now, so it was probably just the wires.

canuck, yes on all acounts. I have it on my car. It helped out mid-range power a little but the main thing is idle is much smoother, that combined with magnecore wires got rid of almost all the vibrations from my urethane motor mount.

Acell makes a coil pack too for about $50. I guess you guys missed all the times this has been discussed in zetec tuning or never read the sticky post at the top of spi tuning. Might find some usefull info in there for the zetec's too.

Well if it helps the idle I'm very interested. Even with a chip, new fuel pump and filters, spark plugs, my idle is still rough. And Ford can't seem to figure it out.

I made a topic about this a little while ago. The ACCEL, Scream Demon and MSD all look the same. As for how they all perform....probably similar but I trust MSD. Currenly my MSD wires are at the MSD HQ being modified to fit the MSD coil tower for the Cobra motor and then I will give it a review and see if it helps much.
