Thank you for the e-mail regarding the difference between the Fram PH8316 and PH3600 oil filters for your 2002 Ford Focus with the 2.0L DOHC engine. We welcome the opportunity to be of service.
To confirm, the PH8316 is the recommended Fram oil filter for the 2002 Ford Focus with the 2.0L (16 valve) DOHC (3) Zetec and DOHC HO (5) engines. The PH3600 is recommended for the 2002 Ford Focus with the 2.0L (8 valve) SOHC (P)
engine.
Our Ford research data identifies the original equipment number F8CZ-6731-AA as the Ford filter used on the 2002 Focus with the 2.0L (16 valve) DOHC (3) Zetec and DOHC HO (5) engines. The original equipment number E4FZ-6731-AB is used on the 2002 Focus with the 2.0L (8 valve) SOHC (P) engine.
Therefore the PH8316 and PH3600 are the respective Fram equivalents. The PH8316 is also equivalent to the Motorcraft service filter number FL2005 and the PH3600 is equivalent to the FL400S.
Both PH3600 and PH8316 filters have the same 3/4"-16 thread size and anti drain back valve requirements. They are comparable in length and outside diameter. The difference is that the PH3600 meets a burst pressure requirement of 200
PSI and the PH8316 meets a burst pressure requirement of 265 PSI. Further, internal relief pressure by-pass valve requirements are different. The PH3600 has a 12 PSI rating and the PH8316 has a 14 PSI rating. The PH8316 also has an anti siphon valve to meet the requirements of the specific Ford original equipment filter used on the 2.0L DOHC engines.
The PH8316 is the recommendation that Fram stands behind and endorses as the filter application for the 2002 Ford Focus 2.0L DOHC engines. While both filters will spin on to your engine, they are not considered to be interchangeable due to their internal differences.
