I go to get my rental from the dealership and the only thing they freaking had was a....CARGO VAN!!!!! That is right a cargo van. I just started cracking up when we went to check it out. If that isn't bad enough they had advertising all over the side of it. Shouldn't I be getting paid....

Worst rental/loaner I've ever had was a Daewoo. It couldn't get out of its own way. The only thing cool was the rev limiter. You could put your foot to the floor when in neutral and it would only rev up to 4k. I used it like an F1 launch control system.

Beat the crap outta it. The general rule when driving rentals or loaners. We got a brand new explorer at the last race i went to. 10 3000rpm neutral drops and 5 burounts later, we overreved it, the rear end dropped and it shot a connecting rod straight through the block. And we didn't have to pay for [censored]

Um, without getting into moral implications I would like to issue everyone a warning.

Many companies are turning to installing boxes that can tell them exactly how you drove the car if there turns out to be a problem. There is some legal details they are working on, but I wouldn't assume you are safe even now.

Some of these companies have discussed putting things in the contract that strictly forbid anything extreme to the car. If they check the box and you broke the rules you are fined.

Did anyone see Jackass the Movie where they took the rental car to the demo derby and then tried to return it. The blow up dolls in the back seat were the kicker.

I would've traded you in a heartbeat. I got a Suzuki Aerio. What a slug. By the time I got to work (about 2 blocks away from the rental place) I was itching for my SPI back.

That was one of the funniest movie scenes I've ever seen.

Worst rental I ever had was a 1997(?) Hyundai Accent. It was a loaner car from the body shop. The windows wouldn't roll down, the speakers were blown, and then, to top it off it overheated on a -10 degree day (I went to school in Northern Wisconsin). I was freezing and had the heat cranked, and no heat, but the temp gauge kept rising up. I opened the hood and, literally, saw a powder residue in the coolant resivour. Apparently, the thing had been without coolant for some time.

Right after I got my Focus a very elderly man mistook his gas pedal for the brake pedal and accelerated into my new ZX3 rather smartly while in the Burger King drive-thru. In that my car was one of the first ZX3s in WA (probably anywhere for that matter), parts were not yet easy to come by so the car was scheduled to be in the shop for 1+ month. So, the guy's insurance company arranged a rental through Enterprise, then the only company that would rent to an 18 year old. The first car issued was a 1997 Ford Escort. Though it had only about 20,000 miles, it felt as though it had 200,000 miles. I finally threw a fit when the brake pedal went to the floor and began refusing to build pressure in the pedal. Aside from its abuse-related mechanical woes, I found the Escort/Focus to be like night/day. Such a profound difference for two cars made by the same maker for the same market.

They finally gave me a nice new CD silver ZX3 auto.

My dealership won't ever give me another rental car, speaking of loaners. While a recall was being addressed I was loaned a silver wagon. Well, I was running late for school one day and stupidly took a rain-soaked turn too quickly. Still relatively inexperienced, as soon as I realized I was going too quickly I jammed on the brakes and skidding up over the curb at around 45 mph. Screwed the car up quite badly, and starting a mild fire in the front end area.

somewhat off topic, but the lincoln V8's as well as the 3L duratec in my mom's escape have a 4000 rpm-[censored] limiter in neutral. really takes the fun out of it.
