Foo, I was hoping it was something confirming or refuting that it will get the Toyota 2ZZ engine - that's been the rumor.

Well, in the UK they come with a Rover K-Series 4-cylinder. Difficult to cert for the US.

My guess is that it would have the GM Ecotec 2.2L, since that's what goes in the Opel Speedster twin, and that engine is already certified for the US market (seen in everything from Cavaliers to VUEs to Grand Ams).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">They are Type R Teg motors. And they have been converted by the importer.

A few things - there are Elise variants here in the US with both the ITR engine and the S2k engine. Just adding that engine doesn't make them legal for street use though. I think a lot of people have been busted so far for importing Elises improperly.

garyrich is right on in the engine dept for the USDM cars - it should be a variant of a Toyota motor - with a rumored ~190hp. If it's not, I won't eat my shorts, but I will be shocked.

Also, the front end will change for the USDM cars as the current headlights don't match federal standards - possibly height?? Anyway - the design of the nose piece and headlights will also change. Given the involvement of Toyota and the design of the current Elise nose piece, I think it's quite possible that they might use the headlamps from the current Celica. That's just my speculation though.

Anybody have a feel for the price? If it looks right, doesn't weigh too much, and I could afford it, I could consider driving the Focus daily for much longer than I anticipated, so I could buy this thing as a track whore.

There is a dealer here in the ATL area that will be selling the U.S. Spec Elise. The were at the car show and I will post pics on monday for anyone who wants them. The base sticker was $38,800, weight was somewhere around 1750lbs with a 150hp engine. The claimed 0-60 was 5.1 sec. I even got to sit in one. This is NOT a daily driver car for anyone over 6 feet tall. It has a VERY spartan interior and and the seats basically have one position, straight up. Think updated and much cooler looking Porsche 914. Like I said, I will post pics of the car, the advertising sign and the little collectors card they gave me on monday.

Do they just mount it horizontally in the rear? What tranny do they use?

The best known Elise conversions on this side of the pond are from prototype racing.

Pics are everywhere, try: park place ltd's site, or elisetalk.com which has some S2 pics as well as many 111s and other Elise pics, such as

and this

And of course there's always google . There are no pics of the final front fascia because nothing's been released - it may not even be done.

Rumored price is set to $38,500 but it's not guaranteed. Unfortunately weight isn't guaranteed either and between the redesign of the front needed for U.S. safety specs and whatever concessions Lotus makes for fat, lazy, stupid Americans (someone on a waiting list wrote they weren't sure they could live with one if it didn't have power windows
) it could push up past 1800 lbs., which would be a shame. I don't think Lotus will compromise too much on it, though, and hopefully whatever compromises they do make can either be optioned off or removed. I really hope this is the start of something big for both Lotus and for lightweight sports cars in general. I would like to see Lotus do well enough that they can bring over a lower powered Elise and eventually get around to making new higher end cars like the m250.
