Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices' Financial Hit

The Associated Press
By WILL LESTER

WASHINGTON (AP) — More people are feeling that record-high gas prices soon will have their wallets running on empty.

Almost two-thirds of those surveyed for an AP-AOL poll expect fuel costs will cause them financial hardship in coming months. That's sharply higher than in April, when about half felt that way.

"I filled up last Monday and it cost me $53," said Gary Spaulding of Fulton, N.Y., referring to his Ford Explorer. "One of the cars we're going to get rid of. We can't afford both of them."

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is more than $2.40 per gallon, compared with $1.86 a year ago and about $2.21 in April, according to the auto club AAA.

And costs are expected to keep rising: Prices for crude oil reached a record of more than $66 a barrel Friday. That's almost 50 percent higher than a year ago.

The poll conducted for The Associated Press and AOL News found that 64 percent say gas prices will cause money problems for them in the next six months. In April, 51 percent expressed such concerns.

Those most likely to be worried are people with low incomes, the unemployed and minorities. However, the level of concern was rising fastest among women, retirees, married people and those living in the suburbs.

"If it gets any higher, I won't be able to drive," said Lois Zumm, a semiretired library worker from Fox Lake, Wis. "I live off my Social Security mostly. And I've got to save something for winter because the heating costs are going to be out of this world."

Filling up with regular gas for the driver of a subcompact with a 12-gallon tank has increased from just over $22 a year ago to more than $28 now. Filling up with premium gas for the driver of an SUV or a big truck with a 30-gallon tank has increased from just over $60 a year ago to more than $79 now. The average price per gallon of premium gas now is $2.65 now and was just over $2 a year ago.

"It cost $65 last week for a fill-up of our Expedition," said Carla Woyden, a mother of four from the Philadelphia area who works part-time. "My husband travels a lot for his job. If he has to drive that (car) around to every corner of the East coast, we're in a lot of trouble."

Richard Curtin, director of consumer surveys for the University of Michigan, said high gas prices can dampen enthusiasm even when the rest of the economy is good.

"It has a rather large effect on the public's mood about the economy, especially among lower-income households," he said. "It directly reduces their spendable income, because they are not able to conserve their use of gas very easily — their trips to work and to the store."

Only about a third in the poll said they think President Bush is handling the nation's energy problems effectively, while almost six in 10 disagree. When asked whom they blame most for the rise in gas prices, people were most inclined to blame the oil companies, followed closely by politicians and countries that produce oil.

"I think they're all in cahoots," said Anna Marie Richard of Granada Hills, Calif.

David Svoboda, who lives near Steubenville, Ohio, said Americans looking to blame someone need to look in the mirror.

"We're not doing enough ourselves — buying the big SUVs — we don't seem to care," he said.

The AP-AOL News poll of 1,000 adults was conducted Aug. 9-11 by Ipsos, an international polling firm. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
If you noticed there were more concerned comments for those driving the gas guzzling SUV's in this survey.I hate to say it but it serves them right for buying those vehicles in the first place.Bigger vehicles=biggger gas tanks=more gas used=less fuel efficient. As far as the others mentioned I along with many of you understand the concerns.
Feel free to comment.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

Wow, I filled up the Beetle with 93 at $2.49 on Tuesday and my mom filled her mini van with reg. at $2.49 yesterday... it's insane!

She is working on getting a smaller car. She even wants a hybrid because of it...

They need to do something fast, I'm not going to be able to drive the Beetle because I won't be able to afford gas!

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

I was driving Brian's focus - which takes Supreme unleaded. It cost me almost $30 bucks to fill up every three days because of my long commute.

Now my office moved closer to home and I've been driving my own focus - it takes less gas and I can put in regular unleaded.

Gas out here is about $2.99 for supreme. $2.92 for regular unleaded.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

you know it's getting bad when even the Focus owners are complaining.

This is causing me to learn to conserve what little money I have left over after the bills if I ever have any...which is sad.

I usually have about $30.00 a week left over after paying my bills......30 bux a week isn't much to live off of anyway...now the gas will surely make a dent in that.....

....the only dent I can't fix is the one in my wallet....

dentless dave!!

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

I live 30 miles from my work. My wife currently doesn't have a car since she can't drive because of the seizures she has been having since January. I have been taking her to work each day since it is fairly close to my work.

On my days off of work, I still have to drive her to work AND THEN pick her up. Going home between the two is costing me $10.00 in gas each time she works when I am off.

I think I need to find a place to kill time in town instead.....

We started looking for her a new car when her seizures get under control and were looking at everything from a Ford Freestyle to a Mazda 5. One I saw the gas prices this week, I mentioned that we should look into a Beetle TDI for the gas savings alone.

I never thought we would own a VW, but now we are seriously considering it since there are so few diesel cars available in the US.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

Our gas is usually pretty decent in Indiana, but 93 (since I can't find 91) is running about $2.69 around here.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

I just hate gas prices when I have to go far away places. That's when the price hikes are most visable and that's when I get the most pissed. Just driving around town though it doesn't really affect me. 10 bucks gets me about 1/2 tank which lasts me for about a week or even more at times. So I don't complain as much as many other people who have farther to travel.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

We're paying over £4 per gallon in the UK, that works out about $7 per US gallon !
I think you bring up a good point. In the United States we were so use to paying such low prices for gas we didn't know how well we had it compared to other nations. I think 2.50 a gallon compared to 7 bucks a gallon is a steal.

How many 12-15 mpg vehicles do you see blasting down the road and what is the average distance to work?

I see hundreds of SUVs in SINGLE occupancy driving down our roads.

Well Ford admitted that the typical Explorer driver puts 70 miles or so each day on their commute to work.

Everyone likes to bitch and moan. Yet. The roads are still packed. Go figure. I go where, I need to go and thats it right now. But, always when. I do get out. Everyone in there mother is out. So, to me. These gas prices arent hurting people to much. Its pretty obvious.

Until Americans control breeding and/or shut down the boarders the roads will continue to get more crowded.

We need to go vertical.

thats not even a relevant point. Our entire economy is based around sub $2/gal gas. It has a huge impact regardless of waht other countries pay for it.

Im glad Im unemployed now. I was commuting 100miles/day to go to work and back. When gas was 1.85 I was sayingt hat if it got any higher I couldnt afford to come to work anymore. Now thank god I dont have to. I used to budget 500 a month for spending money. gas came out of that 500. I used to be able to eat out once in awhile and rent a video, get a coke, stuff like that. But recently ALL of that money went to gas.

Im living better now that Im unemployed than I was when I had a job!

I was basically paying for the privelege of working.

now I dont have to drive anywhere I dont want to and I can and do walk to the places I want to go. I'm fortunate enough to live within a mile of a gorcery store, couple of corner stores, food places, and a bar.

I hardly get in my car anymore, its great!

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

I drive around town here at home because there's absolutely nothing to do. However, once I get back down to school, I'm definitely planning on utilizing my bike, walking, and riding the bus (free with Student ID) to get around town. I'll basically only use my car when I need to go shopping or get home.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

The gas hike is a complete crock. The oil companies are the only ones making money, them and the poiticians in their pockets. I saw a breakdown once of what goes into the cost of a gallon of gas and it was over 50% various taxes. It's complete crap! And noticed that Shell and Mobil are offereing anywhere from a $0.05 to $0.17 discount if you use one of the cards! Tell me they don't have money to spare in the price of gas if they can offer up to a 10% discount!
Also, comparing the US fuel market to the European fuel market isn't very fair. What is the personal vehicle to person ratio in Europe? I'm pretty sure it's much lower than the ratio is here. Also, Europe has a much better Public Transit System in place in a much smaller, more densely populated area. You can barely compare some US cities to most European countris when it comes to that.

All in all, I still need to drive. Granted I'm driving a gas hog S10 right now, that got half the mileage of my Focus, I still need to get to work. And the Metro Link train that I pass on the way to work doesn't go the same way I am, and the buses don't run from my house to my work. That and part of my "Independent American Pride" makes me want to drive myself everywhere I go regardless of the price of fuel. Guess I'm just ignant that way.

They are offering the discount on there gas card because they make MORE money that way than if you use your own credit card.

Credit card companies take like 3-5% of the sale, so if you are paying $3 a gallon for gas, and they are getting 5% of that, that’s $0.15. By just switching over to “there” card they no longer are paying the full fee to another company, so they can pass the savings on to you. Plus a number of people will carry a balance on the card, which means they will make money back in interest.

thats not even a relevant point. Our entire economy is based around sub $2/gal gas. It has a huge impact regardless of waht other countries pay for it.

And who’s fault is that? Europe didn’t make the US build a suburban society, the middle east didn’t make us build the suburbs. We have no one to blame but ourselves. WE built a fundamentally flawed society, one that is VERY dependent on other countries. It’s not the middle east’s fault we are COMPLETELY dependent on oil, and cars, and suburbs, and malls, WE did it to ourselves.

My friend bought a diesel jetta two years ago and loves it - but diesel prices are at 3.25 a gallon out here. Plus, they don't sell diesel VW's on this side of the country, that I know of - he lives in Maine.

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

These gas prices arent hurting people to much. Its pretty obvious.
TRUST me - it is starting to take it's toll - slowly.

You're going to see a domino affect begin, but the actual damage might not show for a year or more.

That's when we'll hit a recession. I'm not into political fights and I ALWAYS stay away from them - BUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTT it's a pattern for us to have a recession whenever we've had a republican president in office for more than one term. Then, we'll get a democrat and things calm down... and the cycle begins again.

The toll already took affect on my pocket book. I wanted to buy a gas guzzler. Because of the gas price hike, I'll be hanging on to the fuel eco- focus for a while longer. Otherwise we won't have money to save, eat or pay rent!

Re: Poll: Many Fear Gas Prices\' Financial Hit

It took 30.45 to fill up the RAV4 that I daily drive yesterday. I need to move closer to work and ride a friggin bike.

I would use a mass transit system but here in Houston it sucks ass. I live so far out that I would have to drive just to get somewhere to ride a bus/train/etc.

I thought you WERE getting rid of the Focus?
I seriously wanted a Suburban not too long ago, and am pretty happy I never bought it. Sure I could use the room, but gas would be killing us right now.
