I was returning from Denver in 2000. I lost my job and came back to Utah to start a new life.
I was towing a U-Haul trailer behind my vintage 1969 Ford Fairlane, it held everything I owned. My comic book collection as well as a very nice Star Wars collection, several nice home theater electronics, a sweet recliner and my paintings.
About 80 miles from Salt Lake and I was driving slower than the traffic. Cars and semis were flying by me, but I continued to drive slower than the traffic. The speed limit was 75 MPH, I was going between 55-60. (As per the speed limit of the trailer I was towing.) Yes I had my flashers on.
Suddenly I hear a weird noise, the trailer disconnected from the ball hitch and my car spins out of control. No matter how I tried to steer into the turn, I could not regain control.
I drifted to the shoulder and the trailer's wheel caught the soft dirt. It flipped at least 6 times dragging me and my Fairlane along with it. Luckily my Fairlane didn't flip.
The safety chains wrapped around the hitch cork-screwing the Fairlane's tail end. It caused it to bend up. I was wearing a lap belt but was still thrown about within the car, the steering wheel almost broke both my thumbs and that little button on top of my ball cap shot into my head like a hammer! But I was alive.
However in one last act of XE, the trailer swooped out into the highway and the locked door busted, spewing the contents of the trailer out. Semis and other cars destroyed what the flipping trailer did not.
The friction even ignited a box of matches I had in a box and started a small fire, I was able to put it out with snow.
I was alive, I guess that was the most important thing. Haha.
