I'm taking a little time to ask the users of this forum, especially the Duratec owners about product development for this engine. Basically, I am asking all of you to take a couple minutes and tell me what parts you want the most, and which parts you can afford or intend to buy first. Obviously, there are some limitations to how much can be done, and how quickly. This is a feedback thread, I'm asking for your feedback, and the more insight you can provide, the better for everyone here.

Short Term Development Items:
SCT Tuning for all Duratec applications
Narrow Gate Shifter
Race Headers 2.0/2.3 MTX/ATX applications. New Design, not currently shown or tested.
2.5" & 3.0" Exhaust System exactly as in use on out 2.3 test car.
HI-FLO "R" Air Intake System (For Cosworth Intakes, High Power N/A)
1-Piece Steel Underdrive Crank Pulley
Cylinder Head Packages
Short Blocks (including lower cost versions)

Long Term Development Items:
Naturally Aspirated Hi-Power Street Package (50% Complete at this time)
Turbo System - Duratec

The main mods I want are cams, sct tuner, clutch/flywheel/gearing/quaife, bigger MAF sensor/injectors. Some day when I have all that I would want to buy a short block.

I'm considering buying your CAI, exept that as impatient as I am, unfortunatly, I would go to someone else before waiting as long as some people say here. No offense hopefully... I'm sure you already know, that you sell best what you've got on the shelf waiting for people.

I second the forementioned:

Larger MAF (since after cai & intake mani this seems to be the bottleneck)

More on SCT tuning (Especially with this ISG Flap thing)

And a nice set of daily drivable cams.

After those & finances permitting...
STREET LEGAL Exhaust header (I live in MD, so our rules aren't as strict as CA- except that I see a lot of potential demand for this one!)

Exhaust, clutch / flywheel

And as a post note...
Anything that increases TORQUE!!!! Since I don't hang out at the local drag strip much, I really enjoy the 0-60 at the stoplights!!

Keep some flexibility available to supply support for unforseen discoveries... eg the ISG flap needs a tune to work well.

I really like the ITB option, but it would have to be something that I could use on a daily driver without sacrificing too much on noise & low end torque.

And there are other items that I may get elsewhere, like a focus central throttle body and... mmm... I'll think of more later... but generally the stuff that's more commonly available & hasn't needed special development.

Hope I helped! & Thanks for your great participation here, your posts are always a pleasure to read

SCT tuning would be nice but, to be honest, I'll probably go with FocusSport if they have it first. Just depends on who irons the wrinkles out first.

I second Oreo's suggestion for a cat-equipped header. It'll make me sad to not see that awesome design that was shown on your website, but I'll deal. Long-tube, low-torque headers are a no-no. Either Tri-Y or something special like the old design.

What is the Narrow Gate Shifter?

I think I'll go third on a header with a cat (something legal, even though I know the costs of trying to get CARB on stuff which would take any profit that you are making on your products and flush it down the drain.) I personally would like to get more power out of the car while trying to keep it as clean as possible.

I like the idea of a 2.5" exhaust, but not sure about the real benefit as I haven't seen any dyno comparisons between 2.25 and 2.5 except for on the Zetec.

I would personally like to see a different model of CAI that somehow would get that thing farther away from the ground (have no idea how to make it work appropriately) but that way some of us wouldn't have to worry incessantly about puddles.

Elaborating on mievil's idea, perhaps a Volant-type pseudo-ram air setup? The MAF itself probably takes up too much room to intake from the upper grille, but perhaps the lower grille could be funneled into an airbox. That seems like it would eliminate any hydrolock problems.

I don't need no fancy CARB certification on my header. Just stuff some Platinum and Rhodium into it and ship it on over.

As you are aware Walter, I'm looking for a n/a huge power setup. Pushing 230-250whp and taking the engine up to around 8000rpms. Built lower, strong head, agressive-quasi-race cams, lightweight strong internals, intake, tb, fuel rail, and injectors, big header, and all the tuning to go along.

My intentions are this: header, cams, tuning. After that possibly the underdrive pully, the one piece would be nice. I think a lot of people are worried about doing this mod. I doubt you'll get a huge interest in it. After those simple bolt ons, maybe I'll look into getting the Cosworth manifold, but to be honest it is hard to spend that much money on a piece that really won't deliver big gains on a simple "bolt-on" car.

I'd like to see some new camber plates that are resonably priced, maybe the $250 range or so. Maybe even sell new arms with the slotted ball joint, that would work in my book and I'm sure you'd have some people looking at that as an option. This also applies to all Focus', not just the Duratecs.

If you could offer your 2.5" exhaust with a resonator and muffler, that would be good (ie. FS Stealth). I'm sure you'd pick up some business doing that. If not, a 2.5" to 2.25" downpipe would be nice for those of us who like and need to keep the cars somewhat civil.

SCT flash, valve springs, 100 series cams, header w/out cat.

Those are the four things in order I was looking to buy from you next. Although, at this point, I'm split between you and Focus Sport for the SCT flash.

I am also curious as to what the narrow shift gate is/does...

After doing the Steeda Tri-Ax STS mod on my car, I can probably address this. The Steeda only shortens the throws forward and backwards. It also has a shorter shift arm, by about 1".

The way our shift linkage is designed, it would be very difficult to modify the shifter's side-to-side action to shorten that movement in the gate. I'm sure Walter has it figured out, and if he offers something like that my Steeda shifter may find itself in the Classifieds.

Would the narrow gate have the same pivot-change as the Tri-Ax? I'm not much on leaning down to grab a normal short throw, but I loved the last Tri-Ax I tested. If Walter can confirm this he has yet another part on my wish list.

Me 2... I plan on installing a Steeda STS this summer, but it could wait pending a better product.

Another thing (saw Moosewax's post):
Some kind of upgrade to the air induction setup. MAF, throttlebody, air intake manifold.
Perhaps a package competitive to Cos Stg1?

#13 ·
1. 2.5 and 3.0 exhausts (your dynos are scary with how little torque loss downlow there is)

2. UDP

3. Race Header

4. SCT

5. Head/Cam package

#14 ·
1. Some kind of upgrade to the air induction setup. MAF, throttlebody, air intake manifold. If you setup an upgrade package for al those together I would be 100% in.

2. aggressive street cams

3. Header and flexpipe

4. SCT tuning

5. Narrow gate shifter, I have the steeda, but if you can firm it up even more (better shorter shifts etc), I would definitely switch.

Other then that the air induction upgrades are the most serious things I am considering.

aaAWWW SHUCKS.... I see a Walter's "Go-NUTS" package for the D2.3!!! "With Walter Marcey's GN Stg 1-4 your Focus will GO LIKE NUTS!! Walter's nuts that is."
Image

Sorry Walter... I couldn't resist.
Image

GN1 = BS Delete, TB, CAI, MAF, & Tune to reflect ISG Delete. Complimentary "Powered by Walter's Nuts" badge.

GN2 = Street legal exhaust & exhaust headder kit

GN3 = Cossi intake mani. & Cams

GN4 = Engine rebuild kit w/clutch/flywheel upgrade

Y'all can feel free to play with the order of these things, since I'm still learning it all myself.

I don't find myself leaning at all to use the STS. If what I am guessing through reading Peloton's post (still not quite sure....does it make it more like a Corvette?) and this makes the spacing shorter (like from 2-3...etc.) then I would be interested in that also.

Not to steer this discussion too far towards shifters, but here's a little diagram I made to help explain things better.

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>Stock Steeda Marcy?

1<font color="white">_ _</font>3<font color="white">_ _</font>5 1 3 5 1<font color="white">_</font>3<font color="white">_</font>5
|<font color="white">_ _</font>|<font color="white">_ _</font>| |__|__| |_|_|
|_ _|_ _| |<font color="white">__</font>|<font color="white">__</font>| |<font color="white">_</font>|<font color="white">_</font>|
|<font color="white">_ _</font>|<font color="white">_ _</font>| 2<font color="white">__</font>4<font color="white">__</font>R 2<font color="white">_</font>4<font color="white">_</font>R
|<font color="white">_ _</font>|<font color="white">_ _</font>|
2<font color="white">_ _</font>4<font color="white">_ _</font>R

</pre><hr />

I couldn't get the text spacing exact, but that seems like what Walter is suggesting and it would be an improvement so long as the shift lever wasn't cut too low.

I will be getting your cai shortly
after that I hope to have these sometime in the summer:
sct tuning
2.5" exhaust

an option for a larger maf would be cool with tuning. maybe interested in a shifter. Although I Will already have camber plates by the time yours come out it would be nice to see something in between the kmac (expensive) and specialty products (questionable design) solutions

First off you rule for parts and info for the duratec just wanted you to know that...
1. I would like the Turbo you have been trying to develope
2. The SCT Flasher
3. Header w/ flex pipe
4. Throttle Body
5. Cam Gears
6. Cams
7. Pulleys
8. Forged pistons
9. Intake system, other then Cosworth
10. Supercharger for those who dont want a turbo

Right now I have the throttle body in mind, since I already have the CAI and exhaust. Im also planning on getting the header w/ flex pipe from FC (still waiting for yours to be available). My biggest thing is that when I try to call your hotline it always rings, no one ever answers, and emails are not responded to as far as Q's, I know you're a busy guy but it helps to let the people buying your stuff that you're actually interested in what we have to say or if we just have questions just a simple answer or maybe someone who may know can help out.

next on my list from you is an intake manifold
then a head package with porting, oversized valves, crane cam, ect.
I may just up my compression at the same time.
and am very interested in a short block.
also I am running focus central cam gears. but they aren't very light. I would like lighter adjustable cam gears.

p.s. what can i up my compression to and still run pump gas.?

#24 ·
I'd be mostly interested in a nice price short block assembly!!! Then most likely the turbo.

#25 ·
Welp i'm deffinatly interested in the turbo system, but for now i will settle for:
1. Intake upgrade in powdercoat black w/the black sleves
2. The Balance Shaft Removal kit
3. The Narrow Gate Shifter
4. One piece steel Underdrive Pulley (in powdercoat black)
5. Possably the Header, not sure yet depending on the turbo
6. SCT tune when avalible
That's about it for now Walter,

It's a long shot, but how about some love for the ATX tranny? I have no idea what that would be, but I thought I'd just throw it out there...
