Pulled over today - No rear reflectors

No, no ticket, it was a sheriff's deputy and he was wicked nice. Looked up the law for me so I'd know exactly what I needed to add.

Long story short, my car is mostly murdered-out other than the wheels. All three brake lights are tinted. Unfortunately, it seems that according to Maine law, you need to have a rear reflector on your car so that even if your lights are off, you show up. Makes sense.

Now, though, I've got to figure out how to tastefully add a reflector to this:

Here's what I have to work with:
1) Must be red
2) Reflection must be visible from at least 200' away to the rear.
3) Does NOT need to be paired (i.e., one on each side).

I think I can get away with this being pretty small. I'd just buy an st170 rear skirt but I'm too damn poor at the moment. So, what would you do to add a reflector to the pic above while keeping it tasteful & looking good?

did he say what size reflectors you need?

#3 ·
That's the thing -- the law only says that it needs to be visible from 200 feet. There's no size requirement.

So, I want to be as subtle as possible while still showing up well at night. I'm thinking some carefully placed strips of reflective red tape, or maybe a small circular reflector either on my license plate frame, or down on the corner of my rear bumper where the st170's lights go.

So yeah, again, a euro bumper would be awesome, but unless someone wants to sell me one for like $50, it's not gonna happen :)

That said, since I'd hate to get rid of my FJ plate frame for a reflective red one, what do you guys think about a round reflector right above the exhaust, sorta like the ones in endblockclip's second link?

Hehe, o2, great minds think alike. I saw that and instantly had fantasies of drilling out modifications to my rear bumper... oh jeez... haha.

Oooh, or both of them real close to each other, right in the middle of the bumper, almost where a two-pipe center-exit exhaust would be... hmm....!

i would keep it symetrical whatever you do. IMO i would put a reflector (tape or w/e) up near the third brake light. Or near the license plate (like an inch of red reflector on each side sticking out from underneath)

What if you had left the Third brake light alone?? That should work right?

#14 ·
just get a decal made out of red reflective vinyl. a shocker, south park character, strawberry shortcake, or whatever you are into.

I had considered that. If I see a ~$10 replacement come up in For Sale, I'll nab it. But for now it's niteshaded, stripping it would be a PITA and frankly I like it better this way.

Yeah I'd say a couple of stick-on reflectors on either side of the focaljet placard are the way to go. Quick, cheap, painless, and they won't kill the looks that much. However, I'd take off that frog looking thing on the right hand side of the trunk, lol...

The other thing is, isn't your license plate itself a rear reflector? When light is shined on it it shines back VERY brightly and I don't see why that wouldn't qualify.

Ugh. Just tossed a couple GIS'd reflectors onto that pic and I hate how both look. Now I'm leaning heavily back toward just getting some reflective vinyl...

Blasphemy!!! I'll never remove my FSM :-D

I thought the same thing about the license plate -- especially because the wording in the book he showed me was "...CAN be red..." (emphasis mine). But the truth is that even if that's correct, I'll probably continue to get pulled over until I have at least one red reflector and I don't want the hassle.

couldn't you just go to an auto parts store and buy reflective tape and just do something small and tasteful on the bumper?
I'm considering two thin, long strips to go in the two seams on the stock rear bumper.

The other option at this point sounds like maybe one or two round reflectors on the sides of the license plate.

if all else fails, just go the easy route and remove the nightshade paint on the tailights. problem solved. tastefully done, easy, and no extra money needed to spend on reflectors.

Most states don't allow you to tint/black out your tail lights. This is why it is never a good idea to do that. Plus who really wants to draw the police closer to there car. I sure don't!

#24 ·
Did you try parking your car at night and pulling up 200 feet behind it to see if it's visible?

I've got my tails tinted but I still have a red third light, of course mine is hiding under the SVT spoiler so it doesn't stand out so much.

If you have to add reflectors add them to the license plate screws OR stick one over the tailgate lock cylinder.

Tint is one thing, blacked out is another.

Mine are tinted but the lights are still clearly visible at night.

I've thought of those for awhile. Alot of HodRod guys use them for their cars. Sometime they don't even have lights, they just use lights like this for brake lights and signals.

Found this sweet picture...reflectors on the mud flaps FTW!!!
