I am trying to do a paint job in my car (ford focus zx3 2001) since it needs one asap lol. I went to a collision shop for an estimate and told me $ 5,000 for one, and it could be more if they paint the car piece by piece? I think that's overpriced! what should be a rough estimate for a paint job (including minor body repair, and some fixes in the body kit...nothing serious)

There's no firm 'regular' price for it but that should get you a good quality respray. With paint, prep is everything and more prep = more money.

Consider all of the trim that has to be removed, all of the sanding and prep work beforehand, checking how straight the panels are, and then the time to paint and reassemble.

Between prepping car for paint fixing dents, removing and reinstalling parts on the car the hrs add up fast. Also cost of materials is added in. A body shop has to make some type of profit to keep their workers paid and lights on. $5,000 is about the going rate for a paint job for a small/mid sized car.

you could do most of the prep-work yourself take the big pieces (Bumpers, Wing, Side Skirts, Fenders, Hood) in to be painted separate and put those bits back on yourself once the main shell of the car is finished....Or have them alreayd off and have them paint ait the same times so there is no issues of not color matching......Prep is the biggest cost you could get a very nice paint job for around $3000 down here in TX

Must cost a lot more where you guys are because here in Houston a good paint job with clear will run you about $3k. That includes doing the door jams, taking off door panels, weather stripping and pulling carpet back. But that is with no dents to repaire or other issues. Now if you add multiple base and clear coats it go up a lot more.

here in texas my brother got his srt4 full respray, door jambs and everything for 2,500 and its very very good quality..i guess you need to shop around or mahybe in your area that's the norm but I would not pay 5k for a full respray, shoot I could buy a clean/low mile svt for that down here

on the Miata I had, the paint was good condition but the clear was fading and peeling in some spots, all I did was sand the clear down, shoot new clear with a bit of gold pearl..it lasted over 6 years looking in perfect condition till I totaled the car... I understand prep work is the most important key of a paint job, but if you are respraying the same color, and there is no body work or minimal body work, there is no reason why a respray of the same color should cost 5k... like I said maybe the labor is overpriced over there in Canada, or maybe underpriced here in texas...but I have friends that get gooooood, goooood quality paint jobs since they enter wek-fest and shows like that and for full resprays are 2,500 maybe less, but usually 2,000-2,500

I used to live down in Florida, miami to be more specific, and they were gonna charge me 1,200 for full paint job...now that I live in upstate NY they think that people can pull money out of their ass...I would pay $2,000 with no problem, but 5,000 for a paint job...I cant get another car with that ;lol

where in upstate NY are you located? I'm in buffalo and have done a handful of paintjobs.....you can scope out my build thread for examples of my work.....I'm about to take another member's car from Pennsylvania for some bodywork and paint for way less than $5k.

i just got an estimate from a friends husband who does body work. He said as a side project hed charge me 2k for the prep, and thats all professional materials, dent repair, hanging new fenders, rust on the doors, everything removed, and then cost of materials. Then he said after he primed it i should take it to maaco and have them just spray it with a couple extra coats of clear, then wed buff the hell out of it. He figured 3k would get me a pretty damn good finish. Most paint jobs come down to prep anyway.

What grade of sandpaper would be best for "prepping" the car?

I hope to have my car painted next summer so I want to sand down the crappy clear coat that is starting to come up on a few edges. Will also be removing the ext trim, interior door panels and weather stripping right b4 it goes into the shop. Also my hood will not be painted as it is brand new cf already cleared and I will not paint the roof either as it is in perfect shape and will be vinyled.

I recently got a quote to have multiple dents repaired, rust repaired, minor touch ups on stone chips, the bottom 1/3 of my doors and rockers cleaned up and resprayed with stone guard for around $1,400. This is from a local person I know that has never screwed me over. I've shopped around before after getting his price and he is always about the same or cheaper than everywhere else and does better quality work than many shops I've been to. This is on my '07 Subaru.

That's pretty good.

Also some shops just charge more cuz they can. Have a local "Named" shop that charges an arm and a leg for work. Their quality is pretty good. Know of another couple shops that charge around half the price of the "named" shop and use the same exact materials and have the same quality or a little better actually. Of course the named shop had more overhead cuz they have a newly remodeled building done in 60's retro and a fancy new seating area and offices. From what I heard they spent around $250k on the remodel. And people wonder why they charge so much. The other shops have just simple places so they aren't making you pay for their unnecessary remodel.
