Quiet exhaust?

After getting my 2002 Ranger back from the body shop, and driving only my Focus for a few weeks, I am really liking how quiet the truck is. I have been thinking about trying to quiet down my Focus for awhile and would like some advice on an exhaust system that is really quiet but still low restriction. I heard that Naz got a real quiet custom system, but I am looking for a "stock" cat back that is really, really, quiet. I have an exhaust shop that can add a muffler and do some other custom work but it will probably end up costing me about the same, or more, than the original MBRP system I now have, with JBA shorty, bosal flex pipe and Random tech cat. Anybody out there have opinions/info on a quiet system? Thanks for any feedback!

just add a MAGNALFOW round mufler to anywhere in your system, it works magic, i dont know how, but its a HUGE difference, and the cool thing is, that they are 100% straight through, meaning there will be 0.000000 loss in HP, and they are about $60, and they have many sizes

mine is almost too quiet....its hard to get the exact sound you want...like now you cant hear my exhuast at all

I still think the magnaflow is one of the quietest systems out there. We have them on both our Foci. after I installed the FC race header on mine it raised the volume as the header will do with any catback. I then installed a magnaflow 14" round muffler and it really quieted things down, but still not enough for me so I replaced it with a 31" round muffler from summitt and it really quieted it down and I like it. The muffler is like the magnaflow, straight through perforated so it doesn't hurt performance. I then took the 14" magnaflow and installed it onto my other already quiet Focus and now you can barely hear it, but you know it's there. One of the things I like about the magnaflow it that it's one of the quietest systems available and since it only uses one muffler you can add another one of any length (within reason) to taylor the sound to suit your taste.

Thanks for the reply! What kind of exhaust system did you have and how loud was it before you installed the Magnaflow muffler? Also, is the Magnaflow stainless steel, and if not is there any kind of issue welding it up to a stainless system?

nordy200: not sure who you are asking but both of our foci have the magnaflow catbacks on them, and yes they're completely stainless. Both were very quiet with just the magnaflow systems but the one with the FC race header got a bit loud with it. Now the one with the race header and 31" round muffler is about as quiet as it was befor installation of the header. The other one without the header although very quiet already, got even quieter with the addition of the 14" round muffler. It's just about as quiet as it was with the factory exhaust, but it still has a smooth mellow tone. The second car didn't need to be quieted down because the magnaflow is already a real quiet system, the only reason I installed the 14" muffler on it was because I had it on my other car before going to the 31"er amd I didn't want to 14"er to go to waste.

Naz, what it sounds like you are describing is an absorbtion muffler (glasspack). Typically its just a pipe with holes in it surrounded by fibermat. Sometimes they increase the diameter of the pipe where the fibermat is, to let the exhaust linger a bit longer there and muffle better (using less fibermat that way). But just because it is straight thru doesn't mean you don't lose power thru it.

Putting any extra muffler worth a crap in an existing exhaust system is likely going to greatly reduce the exhaust noise. Just don't put a cheap restrictive piece in there, or you negate some of the benefit of all the modification to it.

BTW, do you have a supercharger? Just wondering if Zetec Tuning forum isn't a better fit for the topic.

Where are you all getting the 31'' maganflow mufflers. The largest I could find is a 22inch on the site.

EDIT: just read you got it from summit. what brand and pat number did you get form summit?

Where do you guys install these extra mufflers?? Just in the straight pipe section? Did you have them welded in, and wouldn't it create heat under the car if there is no shield above it??? Just wondering, cause i am still deciding on an exhaust system....Peace

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yes they are in the straight pipe section. I already have a 18" magnaflow welded in my vibrant and it is stil loud. Heat is not an issue because there is heat shielding all the way to the back of the car.
