According to reports, the Ranger is dead after 2009.

I hope they keep the compact truck and not go midsize.

I feel there is a market for a small lightweightish reg cab truck. Something with 200lbs of torque not a million lbs of payload but a commuter/ weekend type unit

Way back when I had a Datsun PU remember those. 96hp 4 speed

The Ranger has always been the right size. It spawned the Bronco II, the Explorer, and the Sport Trac. All of those worked really well.

Why don't I own one? I did from '91-'94 and loved it. When I went to look at them again two years ago they didn't update it for ten years and they didn't offer dual access doors with a four cyln.

My wish list? That would be a Taccoma sized vehicle with the Hydraulic boost system on it. If the PZEV 2.3 Duratec would match up with the boost system you'd have an EPA WINNER.

What ever the new F100 is, please don't give us another 4000lb truck. The '08 Taccoma weighs 3200lbs so there's no reason to give us another F150 type porker. Oh ya, stick the 6cyl diesel in there too.

SO they are developing a US only truck instead of giving us the same ranger EVER OTHER country in the world has? Or are we getting that truck with a new name?

I would just keep the name, and give the US the same truck they have elsewhere. The ranger does not have a bad reputation and I see no reason to change it.

Oh, and God help you for comparing American trucks to Japanese trucks.
You're right; Japanese trucks are much, much better than American trucks.

But, if Ford would put in an affordable 4 -cylinder TD, I'd take my chances.

In fact, my ideal truck would be a four door cab with a useable back seat, a six-foot bed, solid axles, and enough torque to tow a small camping trailer/two motorcycles/trailer full of home improvement supplies/etc. Basically, I want the kind of truck you'd find in the outback or the African savanna.

Hell, if any auto manufacturer could give me this, I'd make it fit into my budget.

I'd definitely be interested in this "new" truck if it indeed comes to be.

In the meantime, I might be getting a Ranger this winter. My grandfather has a '93 Ranger XLT, regular cab, 6ft bed, 4 cylinder, manual trans, that's he talking about selling soon. It has 87K on it, so it has TONS of life left in it as long as it's maintained well, which I do all my vehicles. If the price is right with the old man, I'll buy it. I just hope he doesn't try to jack me around on the price, or do like he did with the last 2 vehicles he had that I wanted to buy from him, a 93 Grand Marquis, and a 89 Ranger, the old man sold both of them out from under me. I really wanted the Grand Marquis. It was light blue with dark blue top and dark blue interior. Perfect condition cosmetically and mechanically. It was my grandmother's car before she passed, and he never drove the thing, so he traded it in on his Exploder he bought. It had the 5.0 in it(I'm pretty sure) and had less than 50K on the clock. Thing was beautiful. I'd have kept it just as it was and drove it daily. It would have been a great car, and kind of a way for me to keep my grandmother's memory alive. She pretty much raised me and my little sister because of my parents work schedule when we were young, so we spent the majority of everyday at my grandparents house, my grandfather worked for the post office, then after he retired from there, he got a job at an auto parts place and has been there for 13 years now, so my grandmother pretty much raised me and my sister. What is cool though, is I get to see my grandfather almost everyday I work, as the place he works at is our primary parts supplier and he's always at our shop. So, I get to bust his balls about working, and he returns the favor, of course, and we have some good laughs about work, and life in general.

Sorry to rant like that.

I would definitely look at one of these new trucks from Ford if/when they come about. I'd love it to have the small diesel too, that would rock! Get me a little diesel with an MTX, cab don't really matter, these new "small" trucks have enough room, even for me to be comfortable in a regular cab.

Sheesh it's about time!!

Anyway what's with the name change Ranger had such a strong following and heritage but changing it to F-100? That is what the F-150 had developed from way back when.

The Ranger used to be a model or trim on the F-series...so was the Explorer name....

Plus I'm willing to be thats is a ploy to keep the F-series (which the F-100 would fall under) as the best selling pickups in the world.
