J/K

I have been doing this off and on for almost a year now
Image
.

Almost finished.

Lots of work.

Has anybody done the whole set by themselves?

I would imagine a shop would charge around 600 dollars to do all the bushings.

It has been fun.

I have had my Focus sitting in the garage since last summer. School got to me

Anyhow if you have done this mod by yourself you are a stud!

The front control arm deal WILL separate the men from the boys! Be ready for a substantial increase in impact harshness. Small bumps will feel bigger. But OH the turn-in! Will be cool for all you wenies who live where the roads are smooth!!

I did this on my '95 Escort - It took about 20 man hours of labor for me to do. I blew 5 hours a day saturday and sunday on 2 weekends to do it. I know what you mean and I feel your pain...

ok time for the question... is it worth it??? just from someone who dares to try it but isnt sure of the reward... my fathers the ford mechanic and im sure he would love to help but i dont want to involve him in something thats not going to make a "noticable" difference in my cars handling or performance

I am actually thinking of doing this to my car. But I have a question. I already have the H&R coilovers, and the front and back Eibach sway bars. So those all have the polyurethane (SP?) bushings. Now, if I wanted to do a complete job, what else do I need to do. Engine mounts? Anything else?

Thanks, Sartre

P-51, my experience is that any bushing that requires the replacement to be pressed in can also be pressed out.

The problem on the Mustangs was usually that the control arm got squished because that end of the arm was flimsy.

However I say this not having done a Focus before. Anyone have a Service Manual yet?

hey s - where id that part located in the engine bay??

Just to the left of the engine block/cam gears. Its mounted horizontally with the big disk facing up. You should have no trouble spotting it. Getting it off the car is about a 30 minute job, not sure about actually putting the bushings themselves in since ive never seen that done.

P-51, you have to use a cutoff wheel cuz there is a metal sleave (sp) over the post that has to be taken off. if you cut to far just fill the cut with weld. then grind and sand it smooth again.
I ended up doing this to a 2mm grove i put in it. it is hard to tell when to stop, but the thiner it gets the hoter. so just watch for it to turn a bluish color.

isnt the motor mount an oil filled mount? to stop the harsh vibration of the motor? if anyone has done this does the car vibrate more?

I did it myself on the Mustang, but it was a real bitch.

I have these sitting around for the Focus, but haven't started installing them yet. I was thinking of getting some new control arms so I could change them at my leisure and just plop them in when I'm done. And if I don't like it I can just put the old ones back on.

How do you install the ones in the front control arm? Do you burn the old one out, and go to a machine shop with a press to get the new ones in?

Were you going to answer my question? I really need to know how you get the old bushings out of the front A-arms.

P-51 I used a hammer and a huge flat head screw driver and hammered the screw driver in 8 locations directly across from each other on the big bushing. There is a hard plastic shell around the rubber bushing material that is glued on or somthing. I carefully separtated it.

ESB replaced.

Tommocrow I wpll work on the cmaller bushing nds of the A-arm.

I just talked to Bill of ES R&D.

He said that the motormount should not include grease during the intsall.

There have been a few instances in extreme racing situations where the motormount bushing has slipped out a bit.

Good people.
