Rear ABS sensors directional?

Hey,

I just replaced my rear drums and wheel bearings on my 00 ZX3. I put everything back together and now I get an ABS warning light. I see the part numbers for the abs sensors have a left and right. The spindles look identical so I might have mixed up the left and right side sensors. I didn't think this really would matter so any one know if there has to be a specific sensor on each side?

I made sure the sensors were plugged in and I reused the abs sensor rings onto the new drum hubs.

Thanks

Okay so I see one sensor has a yellow band on it's connector and the other one doesn't. But the car's harness side doesn't have a matching yellow band so I don't know which is which. Can anyone help me out?

I swapped the drums (with the sensors in them) left to right. I tried turning it on and the ABS light still stayed on. I could try disconnecting the battery to clear the code then try again.

Right side sensor YS4Z*2C190*BB

Left side sensor YS4Z*2C190*CB

Your old ones won't have numbers like that on them though, you'll only find engineering numbers.

I'm not sure but I think you'll find the ends that bolt to the knuckle are different so they can't go on the wrong side.

You're sure your new drums had the exciter rings on them when you installed them? Did you reuse the old exciter rings or get new ones?

And for Cedilla, ABD was an option on all Foci in every year with drums and all the disc brake cars had ABS standard.

ABS light won't just clear it self, by turing the wheels after swapping the drums, you have to unhook your battereis to "hopefully" clear the code, then take it for a test drive, so that ABS can perform its tests. It starts when the car rolls more thatn 5 MPH, usually when you are still in the driveway.

I was away from the forum for a bit. Thanks for the help guys,

I tracked down the sensors as made by ATE and saw that the one with the yellow mark is more than likely the RH side sensor. So good to hear confirmation.

The new drums were bare. I had to buy new bearings and reuse the old sensor ring/tone ring and metal water seal. The seals did not want to seat correctly and one of them was deformed a bit. The dia of the original drum hub where the sensor ring mounts was 72mm and I measured my new drums as ~71 so I had to 'pinch' them on to make them stay. But I'm not sure about the side with the deformed seal. I can't tell if the ring is sitting down flush.

The air gap is tighter so I was worried they are too close to the sensor ring and hence tripping the code.

I'll try putting it back together and try disconnecting the battery to see what happens. The car's been on blocks for a few weeks so I hope it works.

Oh and I didn't have an ABS light on the car before changing the drums. I just assumed something was wrong and the computer sensed it right away (ie air gap).

The sensors have identical connectors and the spindles are identical. I think the backing plate and knuckles are different left to right so they can use the same spindle/drum assembly. This means the abs sensor is behind the spindle on the RH side and in front of the spindle on the LH side of the car.

Ah so I took the new drums into the Ford dealer and showed a mechanic to get his opinion. The ones I bought don't have the same machining of the hub where the ring sits. The factory ones are beveled which allows the sensor ring to sit down further. So they gave me a deal on new ford drums with the bearings etc but I had to buy a 'recall' kit to get a better deal on new sensor rings - and I've got a whack of spare parts. My original rings were beat up from me trying to pinch them onto the aftermarket drums. So after all that I take the stuff home and remount my ABS sensors to the spindle and put everything back on the car. I turn it on and the ABS light is still on with Ford parts! So I pull the battery and try it again and the light is on again. I'll have to take it in.

Its been a while but after getting the ABS looked at by a mechanic it appears my Right Rear sensor is damaged. Probably from the old drum and spindle popping off the back and pulling the sensor harness tight. It must have snapped the conductor in the sensor.
