Rear driver's side shock is squeaking badly

Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

It started a couple of weeks ago. I have about 2,000 miles on these KYB AGX dampers and they recently started squeaking while going over bumps.

I did a major process of elimination to figure out it has to be the shocks. I even removed the shock and drove around and the noise was gone.

I then disassembled the mounting hardware at the top and used Lithium Grease to coat everything.....including the P-51 shim and mount. It remained, just the same.

Does anyone have any idea if it might be something else instead of the shock? The bump stop maybe? I called KYB and they said it was VERY rare for the shock itself to do this, so I am wondering if it might still be something else.

I finally installed my old, stock shock and the noise was gone.

Just grasping at straws here, but isn't there a bushing at the bottom of the shock where it mounts up? Perhaps that's squeaking.

There is, and I already checked that. Greased it up really good. Plus that is also used with the stock shock and it is not squeaking with the stock shock. There must be something wrong with the shock itself.
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

Does the shock squeak if you compress/uncompress it by hand, i.e. by itself when its not mounted in your car? Otherwise, I think you've been pretty thorough. Does the shock have any sort of warranty?
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

Nope, doesn't do it by hand.

There is a warranty from the place I bought it from, but they will only take returns when an invoice showing professional installation is submitted.

So basically I'm [censored]. I'm going to call them tomorrow and see if they will work with me. If not, I'll just buy a replacement from Tire Rack.
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

I wouldn't worry about a squeak. Is the shock leaking? Look for shock oil anywhere on the shock; around the top of the body where the shaft enters, at the top of the shaft, etc etc.

With the Koni's turned on full stiff I could literally hear the "whoosh" of shock oil in the rear (had the windows up at a rain event).

Plus, you're process of elimination doesn't quite work. Your OEM shocks aren't nearly as stiff as the AGX's, so saying that putting the OEM's back on eliminated the squeak isn't really valid. You'd have to replace it with another AGX.

But it's been my experience with AGX's that they are damn near bulletproof (unless you're lowered beyond an inch).
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

Well, I'm not worried about the performance. I'm worried about my sanity because it is annoying as hell!
I drive my car almost 100 miles a day and I need it to be livable as well.

And no, I can not find that the shock is leaking at all.

Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

Okay, to eliminate absolutely ALL possibilities (thanks carlfreddy....
) I removed the KYB from the passenger side and put the squeaky culprit in its place.

The squeak is now on the passenger side. It is most definitely the shock itself.

Time to mess with getting a replacement through Performance Parts Store off of ebay, or just buying a new one from Tire Rack and forget all the hastles.

maybe the seals are just a bit dry? it must have some sort of external wiper. I don't know what would be a safe lubricant to try though.
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

I called KYB a few days ago and they suggested spraying WD40 on the shaft. I did that and it had no effect.

I guess I just have bad luck.
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

My passenger's side is sqeaking... Have you hit any potholes or anything? Mine turned out to be a bent strut.
Re: Rear driver\'s side shock is squeaking badly

^^^ nevermind, I'm retarded. I don't see how you would bend a rear shock. :embarassed:
