Rear engine mount ?

1109 Views 28 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Oreo
Ok so i put on a VF rear engine mount the other day. When my car is at idle around 750-800 rpm's the car shakes quite rough, but when it gose over 800 rpm's it feels fine. I checked all blots to make sure they were on tight after 2 days of driving. Has this happen to any one? have any ideas?

Thanks

That is normal for a polyurethane engine mount.

...less engine motion also equals more vibration. It's just the physics of it all.

A worthy trade-off for improved shifts, I say.
If you think it's shakey now, just wait until you have to turn on the AC.

im gonna try some things i just read if it is a bad vibration it may be on to tight i think it needed 35 lb

Maybe that's why I never liked that mount in my car; I always have the A/C on.
I also have a Lentech-modified autofantastic 4F27-E liquid transaxle.

(And unless I idled in neutral, teh vibraccione was even worse due to the turbine's static loading.

The only part of that I understood was the first sentence.

Liar.

You understood the second one to0.

I will translate the third:

"And unless I selected neutral with the shift lever while the engine was idling, say, at a stop light or whatever, the vibration was amplified due to the torque convertor's physical characteristics of design, construction and orientation."

Very true; it would be funny to see some fool install all three poly mounts on their automatic Focus- it would literally shake the bolts loose from the interior.

i've got all 3 VF mounts on my automatic.

aside from like...my liscense plate rattling on my daskboard...

i don't even notice that it vibrates anymore...

yeah, you get used to all three mounts. And then, when you get a tune, you never even know they are there with a slightly bumped up idle other than the benefits of them.

The mount has a metal bushing that prevents excessive compression due to overtorquing of the two fasteners.

I don't see how overtorquing the fasteners would increase vibration in this application.
Tuning is your friend. I was rather unhappy with the additional vibration also. Using SCT XCal2 I raised my idle to 950 & like someone already said "you'd never know it was there except for the benefits"
where can i get ahold of a SCT XCal2 with out paying $370, or would i have to go to a shop and maybe have them do it? i hate not doing things myself
That won't work. You'll have to buy one. The Xcals lock to a specific VIN# once they've flashed that vehicle. You could try putting a TINY pin-hole in the throttle body blade. But that's the ghetto-fix.

I don't have the VF mount, just the factory Dogbone with Prothane Poly-U bushings. (Roughly 1/4th the price
)
The only way that I have ever felt significant vibration is if the bushings aren't seated properly and there is metal-to-metal contact. (THEN, it will vibrate like Crazy!)
When properly seated, all is smooth, even with a relatively low idle.

Same here MichaelXi... I got the inserts. They're installed propperly & at the stock 750rpm idle, it vibrates enough that my NON-Car-person MOTHER even asked if it had a miss, or if something was wrong- WITHOUT the AC on.

How odd.
Mine is smooth as stock at idle when things are seated correctly.

Oreo, automatic or 5spd?

Michael's car is a 5spd S2...

i think it might have somethings to do w/ the transmissions TBH...

cuz if I put my automatic into Neutral. the vibrations go down significantly.
I've got a manual.

I mean, when see just how much play the stock mount has compared to the poly bushings... you HAVE to expect an increase in vibrations.

I STILL say I'd LOVE to hear about someone trying to mix & match the bushings. I'd bet the large poly bushing w/ stock small bushing on that mount would work reasonably well with a drastic reduction in vibrations.

Actually don't you think that would cause the smaller stock rubber section to tear apart more quickly?

I do. The stock rubber mount already has a hard time holding up to hard driving. When you take the play out of one side of the mount, it's probably gonna put more stresses on the weakest link (aka the stock rubber) and tear it apart. Maybe I'm wrong, but after seeing what my rubber looks like in some stock mounts when they come off, I doubt it.
