Repeating Clicking Noise in Engine Compartment. HELP!

Forgive me as my car knowledge is minimal. I have a 02 svt that has been nothing but problems. Anyway, here is my current issue.

In the engine compartment, there is a repeating clicking noise . It is quite loud and you can hear it very easily with the motor running and hood closed. Its comming from the driver side of the car. You can "feel" the slight bump in what its doing by putting your hand on the fuse compartment cover. I checked the windshield wipers and starter by using them and they make "different" noises and work fine. It repeats about twice per second.

The noise started 1/4 mile from my work and decided just to drive there. With the car in nuetral and in gear it is still the same. It doesnt change speed when reving the engine with or without the clutch engaged. Nor does it turn on or off from the air being on or off. I am at a loss to what it is.

I am afraid to drive the car, I dont want to make it worse.

I will answer any questions and have the ability to look at the car whenever I need, so if I need to do something, just ask.

Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like the DSI broke. Have you looked at that?
Whats the DSI, and what should I look for. I know minimal basics of cars in general.

Tks for the help
Thats it

Now to figure out if I should do this on my own.

please do it on your own. The hard part is taking the airbox out. Then you dremel a hole into the clip, and screw a screw into it. Your done (unless your motor fried like a few of us have had happen. Then the motor needs to be replaced as well....

If you do have a warranty you can have Ford do it. Or if you dont have the know-how or the money right now to pay someone to do it you could just pull the power to the motor for the DSI. The car wont run as great but it will be a good sight less annoying. Thats just a temp fix though.
smurf - did you end up replacing your IMRC too?

dykast - fixing the DSI yourself is pretty easy, even replacing the IMRC (that thing making the "cycling" noise inside the driver's fender) is pretty easy too. Pull out the battery and airbox, remove 3 nuts, unplug, install IMRC and reverse. They're about $90 from FORDSVTPARTS.
What causes it to break? Does the DSI start to stick internally? Or just a questionable design? Or poor quality on the original stud mounting?

This little thing (1st pic) breaks off the other part (pic 2) because it's just plastic and the cable pretty much keeps constant tension on the part - causing it to shear off.

I need to replace mine, I'm being lazy. But I have a whole slew of stuff I need to work on as well....
well, i fixed it by following the instructions above, sorta

It still does it when I start the car, but then it stops. I deffinatly can feel the power in the car again.

But now, the check engine light is on.

Also, I had the flashing radio problem, i unhooked the battery and it went away, but now the check battery light is on.

How can I make these all go away, im trying to trade the car in.
Pull the bulb behind the CEL.
Pull the bulb behind the CEL.
That is shady!

The CEL from the DSI is now more than likely the DSI motor having gone bad. I'm replacing mine soon, but I have heard that normally taht will cause the CEL to go away.

what is the CEL?
