I want to know what everyone thinks is the difference between a ricer and a turner. I have read alot of comments and people say "ohh thats too ricer" or "wow getting a little ricer there" I'm just curious what every thinks the difference between a ricer and a tuner is?

a tuner is a car that is modified following sport compact car trends but is NOT overdone, gaudy and covered with cheap crappy parts(APC, XRacing).

A Ricer is the civic with a 2 foot tall spoiler with autozone stick on hood scoops on the hood and magnetic flame decals on the side of the car with spinner hubcaps. Ricers vary but overall their tacky and gaudy tendencies are universal.

Example:

I would say any sport compact that puts form far ahead of function. If the part is functional but not functional on YOUR particular car, that also qualifies, like the two foot tall multiplane wing on a car with a top speed of 110.

  exactly what I thought. ricers are non functional, tuners are functional
"provides 200lbs. of downforce at 250mph or above"

I agree with Kris on this one.

i know right now my car sounds like a ricer. the loud raspy exhuast. but im not a ricer. i feel a ricer with that kind of exhaust thinks his wal-mart special fart can is awesome and will do nothing to change it. where as i have genuine magnaflow parts, not something you can get at wal-mart and im in the process of fixing the problem. i have a huge resonator in the back seat that is going in when i can get down to my buddies to borrow his welder.

but i know no one knows that so i guess ill be a ricer to them. ohh well

I feel strongly that the term ricer refers more to a mentality whose physical manifestation is a poorly executed automotive abhorration. Essentially a ricer believes that their vehicle is far superior to all other vehicles on the road, both in physical appearance and performance. It doesn't matter if the individual drives a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am with twin canister exhausts and an APC wing, or a 2007 BMW 335i (although this person may be entitled to claim that they are infact superior). I think that all car enthusiasts should be open-minded about the performance and aesthetics of (most, excluding Mini-vans and the majority of GM vehicles made prior to 2002) all cars.

I realize that this goes counter to most people's opinions on the matter and makes it difficult to refer to someone's vehicle as rice. Instead of calling a questionable modification 'rice', I think its more appropriate to refer to it as a "poor tuning decision".

What if one has straight pipes + a cat post turbo. Is that rice?

Tuner = Form follows function
Ricer = Form is the function

Edit: Let me clarify. A Ricers Form is to look fast. A Tuners function is to be fast.
x2^

A classic example of "rice" is buying that hideous looking and sounding 5" exhaust tip instead of buying a good quality cat-back system.

well if you can hear the turbo no i would call it rice unless your sitting reving at everyone at the stop light.

Seth, i couldnt agree more. he basiclly summed up what i couldnt say. that is exactly how i feel.

tuners modify cars to perform like race cars or cars above their class
ricers modify cars to look like race cars or cars above their class

I think I can pretty much sum this up...

Let's start with Ricer...

A person who makes unecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster. The most common modifications are (but not limited to):

- Huge exhaust that serves no purpose but to make the car louder
- Large spoiler on the back that looks like something Boeing made for the 747
- Lots of after-market company stickers they don't have parts from, but must be cool
- Expensive rims that usually cost more than the car itself
- Bodykit to make the car appear lower, usually accented with chicken wire
- Clear tail lights and corner signals
- A "performace intake"- a tube that feeds cold air to their engine usually located in areas of excessive heat (behind or on top of the engine)
- Most of these riced cars (a.k.a. rice rockets or rice burners) are imports; Honda Civics, Accords, Integras, CRXs, RSXs, Del Sols Mitsubishi Eclipses, Lancers, Subaru Imprezas, however there are some domestics such as Chevrolet Caviliers, Dodge Neons, Ford Focus.

Now, let's try and define "Tuner"...

COMPLETE opposite of ricer. The tuner is typically all go no show. What is UNDER the body / hood of the car is far more important than how the car looks. For example the tuner will actually have no stickers on his car from where he got his parts, while the ricer will have stickers all over his car from parts he doesn't have.

These descriptions can be found at http://www.urbandictionary.com they have plenty more on there as well, some of which are VERY funny!

The old school answer?

Anyone who calls themself a tuner and doesn't have their own shop... is a ricer.

There's a user or two here with "tuner" as part of their usernames and when they start a thread with a post asking the most basic of technical questions that any professional tuner should know... that person is not a "tuner".

The present-day answer?

A "tuner" could be anyone who has torched the springs on their car to lower it, then slaps a bunch of vinyl all over their car.

See what I'm getting at? The line between a true tuner and someone throwing Autozone parts at their car is being blurred... big time.

Back in the day, only a person like Jon Kuroyama of HKS or Randy Robles of FocusSport or Walter Marcy of Marcy Motorsport had the true "tuning" knowhow to deserve the title of Tuner.

:garage:

The best answer?

sicko's:

tuners modify cars to perform like race cars or cars above their class
ricers modify cars to look like race cars or cars above their class
