Shifting Problems - 1st and Reverse only!!

909 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  DirtyFocusZX3
Ok heres the deal. Just the other day i got into my car and it was REAL hard to put it in reverse. It took like 4 tries and when i finally got it to go in reverse it took a lot of strength. Then i went to put it in 1st and it has the same problem. If i have running it in my garage with parking break on, the entire car raises when you put it into 1st while sitting there. Every other gear is fine except for them. I checked the brake/clutch fluid and it is full however i went to check the tranny fluid and i can find the where to check it. Where is the tranny fluid dipstick and does anyone know why this would be happening. My car is still under warranty but i cant take it in till Tues. If i can fix this my self then i will definitly save the trip. Thanks for any help.

i dont know but i have problem getting reverse in the 6 speed cobras
Strange, but one thing I can say is that manual transmissions don't have dipsticks typically (or always?) As I understand it, there is a bolt on the transmission that can be removed to check the level (like you have to stick a finger in or something...) Hopefully someone here has that location or information for you.

Try blipping the throttle next time it happens. I don't know if it matters or not, but usually that works for me when it's hard to get in gear.
What kind of fluid do you have in your transmission. I had ATF in there, and it wouldn't shift in cold weather (like you are describing). I switched to the Ford XT-M5-QS (I think that's what it is) and it works like a champ. Maybe it's just time to change the fluid. Could be a linkage issue. I doubt it's the synchros, as the MTX75 is prone to destroy the 3rd gear synchro first, and I don't think there is a reverse synchro.
I have whatever fluid comes in it from the factory. I took it to ford today and they said my clutch is bad. I only have 13600 on it. How the F is my clutch bad? They say the clutch only has a 12000 mile warranty so i am stuck fixing it. They wanted 815 to fix in an i told them where to stick it. I am calling around right now. Thanks for the help.

Take it to another dealer. That doesn't sound right. I have my OE clutch, and I have 60k miles with nitrous on it.
how the F is the clutch bad, you're not having trouble keeping it in gear, you're having trouble GETTING it there
i don't know anything about clutches or stuff. but my solution is that the car has to come to a stop or at least slow down before you're allowed to put it into reverse. also, with the first gear, i get that problem too, what you can do is let the car slow down before putting it into first. i believe the things you're experiencing is the "dummy-proof" things that they need to put onto cars. they don't want some idiot going 95 in third and downshifting to first.
Do you have a rattling noise comming from your tranny area when the car is idling in neutral with the clutch engaged? If so you could use that to get a new clutch because there is a TSB out that says to replace the clutch if the throw-out bearing is rattling. I had my clutch replaced at over 20k for this reason.
