there are only 2 available. the one that BDR makes and the one from B&M UK. I say buy the BDR one cause those guys have always been real good to us and make a quality product.

ditto
I was just gonna cut about an inch off my stock shifter, but then my dremel crapped out.

I dont understand why shifters and knobs cost so much money.

I already have the coolest shift knob around, so I REALLY dont see the reason to dump $100+.

shortening the lenghth of the stick dosent shorten the actual throw. its just a cosmetic mod. the aftermarket shifters also tighten it us so there isnt so much play in it. especially from 4th to 5th. If you dont wanna do that, there are bushings available from EFP that are supposed to reduce the play.
Thanks for the info. After i found out who made them i went online and checked them out. Definatly hands down the BDR was the better of the two.

txfo..shortening the stock shifter will definetely reduce the throw but not as much as an aftermarket one with a redesigned pivot point.
my bad then. I chopped mine but it dosent feel any shorter. how exactly does it shorten a throw with the stock pivot point? yes the top of the stick dosent go as far but duh, its shorter. I thought the point of the shorty shifter was the new pivot.

imagine the stock shifter was 2ft long
and the pivot point stayed the same, the distance your hand would move would be alot. If you cut down the top of the shifter by one foot leaving the pivot point intact you can see that your hand will move less but the bottom part of the shifter will move the same as before.

I made a picture to ilustrate this but immagestation is giving me grief right now, sorry.

Good lord....where the hell did that come from?? haha

Truth be told...I have driven a manual zetec with almost every aftermarket shifter known to man...aside from the OBX....and the Focus Central shorty and race shifter are the smoothest and best built in my opinion.

....whoa....did I just type that???

haha

FC sells the BDR one. I am pretty sure focus performance sells it too.

yeah, I got ya on that part. obviously the distance of the knob has changed. but my understanding of a short throw is that the new pivot point makes the gates feel closer together. My old delorean had a real tight gearbox. real short stick but the gates were so close you just flicked it into gear. now get in the focus and see how damn long that throw is. with or without a chopped stick, its still a long ways.
like I said before the combination of moved pivot point and shorter stick you get with an aftermarket shifter will shorten the throw the most. Moving the pivot point up on the shifter is the same thing as shortening the shaft from the top is it not? Only difference is now the length of the shifter below the pivot point is longer so the leverage is decreased even more making the throw even shorter than you can by just cutting the top off, so that would make the gates feel closer.

exactly. if you chop the top of the stick, a 45* throw is a 45* throw. regardless of length. If you move the pivot point up, you reduce the 45* top end throw to say 30* (just pulling numbers)

Yeah, but my point is: Is that really worth $150? That seems a bit...insane, I think that's the word I want.

I dunno, I guess its just one of those things...some people get it, some dont.

k..there's my wonderfull 5 year old style chop

You can clearly see that the cut stock shifter will move less while the angles remain the same and that the aftermarket one will be even quicker. I kept the shorty using the same angles to show that the shorty, will make the shifter cable move a farther distance with the same throw as the cut stock one. However, since the actual cable can only move a certain amount and the shifter has stops the throw will be shorter so the angle will be less like txfo mentioned and not like in the pic.

What i'm trying to confusingly say I guess is you'd have to cut down the stock shifter alot to make the throw as short as a shorty shifter. If you only want to cut an inch off then you probably won't notice it too much but if the shifter was long enough to cut alot off you would notice it alot more. I cut like 4" on my old alfa romeo's shifter and it was fantastic.

Saying spending $150 on a short shifter is about as insane as someone spending $100 on a homebrew tb kit to make your engine more responsive.
Putting any money into a car is insane when you think about it. Luckily i'm certifiable.
