Should I get a short shifter?

It's been awhil since I've done anthing to my SVTF and I was tossing around the idea of a short shifter. I had a B&M in my ZX3 that I had, and I loved it, but I was having numerous problems with the transmission then and the dealer loved to blame it on the shifter. I am unhappy with the shifter thats in the SVT because it's so long and I have been told that the short shifters made for the SVT's are shorter and create a shorter throw, but the shift effort is more.

Well, waht are your thoughts on your short shifters, and which one is the best?

Well, I have the steeda and wouldnt trade it for anything. The shifter is almost the same height as stock, so its easy to reach, but under the pivot point is longer than stock, so the throw is shorter. The FC shifter looks great, but you could cut your stock shifter and get the same performance and looks as the FC shifter.
I would recomend Steeda.

With the steeda, you said that it is almost the same height as stock. What do you mean by almost? I do like the look of the shorter shifter. And also, does it come with a new knob?

Where is the cheapest place to get one?

I still have no idea why guys want to get rid of their stock knob! It is an awesome beautiful peice. If I had gotten the FC shifter, then I would have still used my stock knob...geez. And yes its about 1 and 1/2 inch shorter than stock. If you want something for looks, then just cut your stock shifter shorter. If you want a quality peice, then get the Steeda.

The people who have the Steeda will always tell you that's it's the best.
I have the Focus Central shorty and I love it. It's much shorter than stock and it reduces your throws as well.
IMO, the Steeda is just as high as stock and my main reason for getting a short throw shifter was to get a shorter handle. I wouldn't try cutting down a shifter, but that's just me.

As with most mods on cars, it all depends on what you want. People chose things for diffrent reasons. I don't see one being dramatically better than the other.
Good luck.

I still want the performance and quality, but I absolutly have the height of the stock shifter. As for the shifter knob, Mine got all scratched up while moving from San Diego Ca. to Norfolk Va. I had the car packed FULL!

After reading on the focus central site and the steeda site about there shifters. I think that I'm gonna go with the Steeda. I think that it was the FOcus central shifter that I heard about shifting effort increasing because it was too short. As for the steeda, as long as it is shorter than stock, I'm happy.

Get the steeda. It is shorter than stock and shifting enjoyment is exponentially improved. It's not just a cut down stick, either. It is a re-enginered piece that shortens the throws and places the stick in a comfortable (read ergonomic) position for shifting. I'm not dissing any other shifters. I just know from experience that you won't regret buying the steeda.

RushPerformance,
Deffinately go for a Steeda Short Shifter as it is one of the best first mods to add IMO

.Ths shifer is about 1 inch or so shorter, plus the shifting is shorter with a more positive quality feel to it.

I am sure since your factory shift knob is slightly damaged ask Steeda which one will work on their shifter. Plus Steeda will take off 10% for SVTOA members on parts.

Anyway, keep us posted with what you decide on.

I love my Steeda Short Throw, It made it feel like i was driveing a diff car. Here are some short clips of my shifter before and after. Heres the before. And heres the after.
DANG! After installing my Steeda STS, Im having to really push to move mine its so solid. I honestly think my shifts are slower now because of the effort needed to shift. Your video shows you easily shifting the Steeda (with the european pinky waving... signaling a "proper shift" haha)

Any ideas on why mine is uber hard? Id go buy another packet of grease, but I dont think thats going to help any.

Yeah I know the feeling. I tried short shifters and gave up because it was just to much effort/slower to shift. Anyway I just made my own dam shift lever. I bent the stock shift 10* degrees to the left and 15* degrees back. And have loved it ever since. Now putting car into 5th and 6th is much much easier. 1st and 2nd are lightning fast cause it so close to my leg. Right when my hand comes off the wheel the lever is pointed right at me. Took about hour or so to get use to new position, there is no binding or mis-shifts. I'll try to get a short movie up tommarow
Enjoy

As promised here is:

Modified Stock

I know the way I hold the shift knob may be different from many of you. And the way I grip is the same whether I am using the B&M knob or the Stock Knob. The biggest differences is I dont have to reach down or lean over to hit 5th and 6th. Plus 1st and 2nd are much closer to my body and much faster. True the throw is pretty much the same. It just the angle of approach is different. Hope that helps. If you wanna shift my gears come see me at FOTB this year...

DAHTcom, I only used a little bit of the greese that came with the Steeda Shifter. As far as it being hard to shift I heard that before so in the video I shot I did only grab the shifter with 3 fingers to show how easy mine was, reverse is alittle hard to get into but I don't mind that. Shifting with the Steeda for me is a dream, I used to speed shift with the stock shifter and not only miss gears but grind acouple as well because of taking my foot off the clutch before I was in gear. Now thats just a thing of the past. Now i'm shifting gears in 20/100th of a second (had my boy stop watch me) and haven't missed or grinded any gears after my Steeda install.

I have had the STEEDA on for about 8 mos now and the difference between it and the stock shifter is like the difference between rowing with the stock one and shifting with the STEEDA. nuff said!

DAHTcom.....When I first installed my shifter it was a bit stiff. After a few weeks it starts to loosen up.

D.....How did you bend your stocker? It seamed to be a prity solid piece. It is a clever way to get a better shift feel. That's what I like about the Jet, people come up with some clever ways to solve problems. I have some picts of my shifter swap, I will see if I can get them up on the net.

Ok lets see if I can get these picts to work. Well couldn't get the picts to show up so there are some links.
