I've read of ppl reseting the ECU when they do certain upgrades to their cars. I've responded asking what exactly this means. Is it unplugging the battery for like 30 min? That's the impression I got. And also, what upgrades is this necessary for? I know some said intake, what about an exhuast? I'm sure this is a really basic question but hey gotta learn it sometime

Simple answer...

Resetting the PCM can be done a couple of ways. Some OBD II scanners are capable of resetting both the codes and the KAM (Keep Alive Memory).
Removing the NEGATIVE lead of the battery for 5 minutes (Ford Service Manual number) will also do it.

The KAM reset is what you're after when you do mods. That's where the "learned" data resides. By clearing it the PCM re-learns at a much faster rate.

The PCM will still learn new data without a reset, it will just take longer.
