Take a look at this if you haven't already!
web page

his engine blew and it seemed like he was shifting right! I mean sometimes I take it up to 5500 rpm, like on the Freeway. Will my engine blow up too? Is this normal? I heard of it happening to a few jetters too, I mean should I worry?

Thanks

No, he was not shifting right. That retard stuck it into 2nd instead of 4th. That can definately cause serious damage.

No, 5500rpm will not harm a Zetec. Mine has spent minutes on the rev limiter... just not all at once.

EDIT: Just to reinforce, kiddie boy racer there should have spent more time learning how to drive and less time spending high dollars on his RSX.

You know that video you saw w/ me Racing at the Track?
Every shift was between 6500 and 6900. (Yes, I have a Diablo Chip, so my rev-limiter is around 7000 now.) I've seen stories of 'Jetters who have accidentally gone to second on a downshift from fifth, instead of going to fourth. Though they reacted quickly, and got the clutch in, it scared the bejeesus out of them. Nonetheless, no known engine damage.

I know a bunch of people who have slammed it in 2nd, instead of 4th and blown it. You really should get used to quick shifting, before you try to impress your friends. Play cool guy on Saturday, be the laughing stock of the crew on Sunday. I mean I know tons of people (10-15), who have done this.

5500 seems to be my everyday shift point. When I realy get on it I take it up to around 6500 and have had no problems. ONly hit the rev limiter at 6900 a couple times.

Shift at 6700-6800 when racing (or some spirited driving)
. 36,000 miles with no problems yet.
I also own an 86 Escort GT where on a couple of occasions I went for 4th and hit 2nd. Sounded liked a crotch rocket at 8500 rpm. Motor still runs too! Best time of 16.87.

I've got to echo MicahelXi here. The fella was shifting like an old lady, while bringing it up into high rpm range (8K+) on his RSX. Add to that the fact that he was obviously trying to "show off" (hence the video being recorded)....and voila, moron move.

I am not sure he blew the motor on that one, at least by the sound of the clip, but he definitely shifted from 3rd to 2nd and OVER-REVVED big time (watch the tach for the moment that you can see it, and it maxes out). May have floated something, but he did get off it pretty quickly.

Bottom line....TYPICAL !!

I shift between 4500 + 5800 almost all the time, and at 2.5 years in...no troubles yet.

I was doing about 80 mph when I tried grabbing 4th. Due to my broke ass shifter mount, it was incredibly difficult to even feel where the gears where, and I totally missed 4th and hit 2nd. Front end did a nose dive, but I jumped on the clutch hard and no damage was done. It's been 2 months now since that happened and no problems.

I can vouch for that, too. A few months ago, I grabbed 2nd instead of 4th. Not pleasant. The car pitched (slammed) forward, and the engine made an awful sound (the sound of a thousand terrible things happenning under the hood). But I haven't had any problems.

I've never seen it happen with the type S, but I have 3 friends who own RSXs. At some point they each missed a shift with their cars... 2 have bent valves, and 1 blew the motor. The best part was all cars were under warranty, Honda refused to make the repairs.

My closest friend got his repaired, after contacting his lawyer, I'm not sure on the others.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Watch the video again - at about 14-15 seconds of elapsed time you'll see the tach spin to at least 2500RPM past redline. What's that on the RSX, about 9,500-10,000 RPM's?

The Zetec is a "Non-Interference"-type engine, and, as such, has a little more protection from accidental "Over-ZIIIINGGGSSS". If you removed the rev-limiter, and just wound it up under throttle to oblivion, you could blow it, but an accidental missed shift seems to cause little damage w/ the Zetec's design. (I wouldn't go try it a dozen times to find out, but, you know what I mean.)

Hah... I was just talking about this same video the other day over in the SVT forum. Here

And, yes, the RSX motors are NOTORIOUS right now for floating valves and "blowing" after misshifts. Apparently it has to do with the intake valve spring not being stiff enough and therefore the valve doesn't get pulled up fast enough at that rpm, the piston flies up and WHHAMOO! Its usually the Type S guys too, because they have a fairly tight 6 speed, and the gates are pretty close.

This is what the end result looks like:
