We are having problems with my daughter’s car, I am not sure if I should go into the details that led up to the problem but this is what we are currently facing.
Last weekend the speedometer stopped working; all other gauges work, the transmission does not shift out of 1st and the overdrive light is flashing orange. We got it out of the mud before this happened.
Also last week we replaced both of the speed sensors (speedometer still not working) and replaced the alternator due to the battery being drained.
Replaced steering column the speedometer stopped working the day before we replaced it. Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Some of the later cars have the speed sensor run off of wheel sensors which are built into the wheel bearings or a ring close to it. In those cases the trans input and output sensors are only used for trans alone.

I’m trying to get the car ready to drive from CA to NC in a few weeks, it’s my daughter’s car and it needed work when she moved last Feb. It has sentimental value it use to be my dad’s, he’s 84 and no longer drives.
I have been doing little things over the last year; lower control arms; both axles on front end; brakes; fan; steering column (ex husband drilled out lock cylinder, long story); both thermostats after replacing the fan and then finding the connector came loose; battery ( a few days ago); coolant reservoir; alternator; and both speed sensors. Motor mounts came in today and a radiator hose will be in tomorrow since there is a small pin hole in the line and the hose is originalI’m just replacing it.

The car was actually stuck in the mud and once we charged the battery I was able to shimmy it out and drive it. That’s when I noticed the speedometer stopped working and the transmission wasn’t shifting. If I put it into reverse, 1st or 2nd manually, it shifts. There are no check engine lights and the gauges work fine, except speedometer & odometer.
The o/d light starts flashing orange when turned off. We did find that rats had been in the engine and I wonder if they got to any of the wires if that may be why the codes are coming up.
DTC codes on my scan tool are:

P0720-FF output shaft speed sensor circuit error;
P0722-FF OSS sensor no signal

There was also a battery low voltage code and 2 for the airbag but I think those should be resolved with the steering column and new battery; I just haven’t cleared any codes.

My daughter and I plan on leaving February 17th and I am losing sleep afraid I won’t get to NC before my first grandchild is born. I will look at the wheel sensors today.

If this helps, the speed sensor that's accessable at the bottom of the transmission on my wife's 2004 ZTS 2.3, is the one that drives the speedometer. I temporarily installed a calibrator in that line to adjust her speedo, and get her off on a speeding ticket. Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone.
Hers was a 5-speed manual, and as far as I know that was the only speed sensor on that tranny.

According to your codes, that is the sensor that isn't functioning.
It's likely the rats chewed through a wire, and possibly that allowed mud to get into a connector and finish the damage, which is why it just showed up.
You're definitely on the right track with replacing the sensor, now you just need to find the open or shorted connection.

That makes me feel better, thank you. I’m hoping to know more today now that it’s the weekend. I read another post that is pretty old that the intermediate band was broke in their transmission and they had similar symptoms.
Hoping we don’t have to go there.

Runs great all is fixed….. So I thought and now there is a P0441 code and we are suppose to leave for North Carolina tomorrow!
