Well, I finished the swap from my blown SPI to Chromie's old ZETEC, and all I can say is... Ahhhhh...much better!:D I'll be posting some SPI bits for sale in the next week, mainly engine items and related parts, ECU, and what not if anyone is in need.

what are some of the most difficult things you have to do to complete the swap?

It's not really that tough if you have a good donor car, and it's compatable (i.e. auto to auto or manual to manual). I did an auto to auto, so no worries there. I ran into no issues, and she fired right up and drove it off without any hiccups or CEL's. If you are not experienced doing this kind of thing, I would have to say that some may have issues with the wiring harness swap (it's only the underhood section that goes from the fuse box to the passenger side to the ECU, then to the center console, and over to the fuel pump, as well as the small section that goes from the fuse box to the fans and PS pump), the swapping of the diode pill in the key to the new pill (you may just have the ECU programmed to the key as well I suppose), or the A/C system, due to the fact that the short lines that come of the compressor need to be swapped to ZETEC lines as well. I guess that's about it! Pretty simple swap with a donor car for sure.

so, this may be a dumb question, but did you drop the engine out the bottom, or lift it up out the top?

Also with the zetec ECU, would I need just the ECU and its wires going everywhere from the "donor" car, or do I need the PCM and its wires too?

Also, do you know if theres any other issues with switching the engine from a hatchback to a sedan?

I'll have more questions, im sure.

My swap is tentative for next thursday. (01 zetec hb to a blown 2000 spi sedan.)

You would be taking it from the top, using a engine hoist.

I would get all wires that you can get, makes it easyer for install. Not sure about the PCM.

No issues from the swap to my understanding. Hatchs and sedans should be nearly the same besides some ECU wires in use.

Will it fit coming out the top? Ive heard that the engines are larger than the top opening... and easier to dump out he bottom of the car? Or is this wrong?

I came out the top, but use a bar that allows you to change the angle as you pull it out. Oh, basically I used the harness that goes from the underhood fuse box, over to the passenger side along the firewall, through the fender, along the kick panel, to the fuel pump. There was also a short lenght of harness that plugs into the underhood fuse box, and goes over along the fender to the trans and fan area. No issues.

Do I need the PCM, and the wiring for that too, or just the ECU and related wires?

LOL. JOKES.
my background on this is I already have an 03 zx3 2.3l. this engine swap is so I can have a beater focus where college ppl can open their doors into and I don't care as much as with my hb.

oh I guess I will also mention I know nothing about swapping motors. that's why I'm asking so many questions and stuff.

...maybe ill make a 'how to' (worthy of being stickied) on the spi to zetec changeover w pics after its done....

and do you mean from a hb to a sedan or from the spi to zetec for the 'joke'?

Neither.

He said sorry you are downgrading, thus bad idea to get a zetec. So I was laughing at him for a poor statement. :)
