Ok!!

So in the interest of keeping all info in one place, please post your questions and fitments here! there are more than a few of us who can and will be happy to answer your questions and steer you in the right direction.

this thread is not about what wheel looks good, how baller or broke-status you are, whether you think a certain wheel is played or not... or debating the point/safety of this look/style!
This thread is simply for Stanced fitment questions ONLY! Take all that other ***** elsewhere!! :thumbup:

Do not ask about if a 215/45/17 will fit your EAPs on a sportline drop without rubbing here, this is the WRONG thread for you. Check out the Suspension sub-forum.

if you want to post a pic of your ride, please do it as a reference to fitment of a specific setup(rather than just whoring the pics around), please include the following info BEFORE the Pic...

Wheel Spec(size/width/offset):
Tire Brand/model/Spec:
Suspension parts:
Drop and alignment spec:

Thank you!

Edit: Stretched tires are safe for normal driving, even Ebrake-turns on dry pavement are no problem!

*** Here is a bit more info from a few pages in that goes over backspacing on the Mk1/2 cars ***

OK so i was tearing apart some 17" wheels for a customer and decided to take some pics to show you gals&guys actual fitments to the strut....

i'm using spacers of 5mm, 6mm, 5mm, 6mm to show the change in offset in relation to the change in strut clearance. i'll also give rough comparables to other widths/offsets that would have the same clearance to the strut!

the static info:
spacers are used in a 5,6,5,6 pattern
OEM strut
SVT knuckle
new hubs&bearings
KVR rotor (i'll get a hat thickness later)

So this first wheel is a 17x8 50et with a 6.53"(165.85mm) backspacing and a 9/16" or 14.25mm thick inner lip@the bead:
Image

same wheel now a 45et(160.85mm):
Image

same wheel now a 39et(154.85mm):
Image

same wheel now a 34et(149.85mm):
Image

same wheel now a 28et(143.85mm):
Image

this is a 17x7 45et with a 5.83"(148.15mm)backspacing and the same 9/16" or 14.25mm thick lip:
Image

same wheel as a 40et(143.15mm):
Image

same wheel as a 34et(137.15mm):
Image

same wheel as a 29et(132.15mm):
Image

same wheel as a 23et(126.15mm):
Image

So all things being equal(like lip thickness @ the bead), a:
17x9 20et with a 5.84"(148.55mm)BS will have a similar strut clearance to a 17x7 45et with a 5.83"(148.15mm)BS
17x9 30et with a 6.24"(158.55mm)BS will have a similar strut clearance to a 17x8 ~43et with a 158.85mm BS or a 17x7 55et

****THINGS TO CONSIDER****
  1. remember these are 17" wheels.
  2. these offsets and BS numbers will not transfer directly to 15s,16s or 18s because all have different diameters and thus will have slightly more clearance(18s) or less(15s&16s) respectively as that diameter increases or decreases.
  3. i added my lip thicknesses so you can remove them from YOUR calculations to figure out your exact fitment by adding in you lip thickness in their place
  4. these are STOCK struts, aftermarket struts and coilover bodies will be different! please measure the diameter of your struts, divide by 2 and then minus the thickness of the stock struts(i'll get this for everyone tonight or tomorrow) from that number... this will give you the difference you should factor into your calculations!

    most importantly this is how you figure it all out:
  5. Basic math, BS:
    wheel width in " x 25.4mm = wheel width in mm / by 2 = centerline of wheel + offset in mm = BS without lip thickness in mm + lip thickness in mm = actual BS in mm / by 25.4mm = BS in "
  6. Basic math, FS(front spacing, usefull if you are changing lips on multipiece wheels where the BS will stay the same):
    wheel width in " x 25.4mm = wheel width in mm / by 2 = centerline of wheel + offset in mm = BS without lip thickness in mm - wheel width in mm = front spacing without lip thickness + OUTER lip thickness in mm = actual FS(front spacing) / by 25.4mm = FS in "
  7. To figure out your BS and Offset:
    put a yard stick across the back side of the wheel and measure down to the wheel hub = BS x 25.4mm = BS in mm - inner lip thickness in mm = BS in mm without lip thickness. Now do you basic BS calculation to figure out the center line of the wheel and minus that from your BS without lip thickness to get your offset!

Sweeeeeeet!

So what sizes tires should I get for my 17x9 et24 cobra reps? 205/40 or 205/45??? I know Armanda has the same wheels on 205/40, but I always like a little more meat on the tires. Will 205/45 still be able to stretch and fit up under the fender?

#4 ·
Ewwww s.drives:lol:

Never though about 215/40. I think 35s would be way to small of a tire for my area with bumps, dips and holes everywhere. So 205/45s is not a good option?

#8 ·
Wheel Spec(size/width/offset): 17x9 +20
Tire Brand/model/Spec: 205/40 Falken something.
Suspension parts: Bilstein PSS-9, stage 3 camber arms.
Drop and alignment spec: Coilovers all the way down in the front, cut springs in the rear. Rear camber at -4.5 degrees. Natural camber up front; driver: -1.3 passenger: -2.7

zx3, we all want to know your specs! DO IT.

Another tire question...I'm currently running S.Drives in a 195/40-16 front, 215/40-16 rear, on a 16"x7.5" and 16"x9" respectively (were on the wheels when I bought them), both are et35. What other tire size options are out there for the front that will fit similarly, but widen my tire brand/model options (as I'm currently limited to the S.Drives if I stay with the same size tires)?

Thanks.

Mike

you are very limited in that size!
Toyo used to make the T1-S in those sizes but tire was discontinued as were those sizes in the T1-R! :(

going with the tire rack you do have the option of a 195/45/16 and a 205/45/16....

they are more expensive than the S-drives but it would be pretty hard to match the levels of crappiness achieved in all areas by those Yoko's! :lol:
that being said, i have ZERO exp with those Michelin tires, how they stretch or any other form of feed back about them!
the 195s are on close-out so you better act fast!

and to give you an idea of how they could look on those wheels...

Mike, please do us a favor and get some gasoline and and a liter and set those s.drives on fire! :lol: I went through 2 sets in about 10k miles and they are horrible in wet conditions, but a great looking tire!

To keep the same side wall stretch you have right now, 185/45 or 205/35. If you don't mind having a straighter side wall than you have now, then 205/40.

Not sure about your tire options since discount tire and tire rack both list only the s.drives.

^ ^ ^ That is some wagon WIN right there. :thumbup:

How bad/how little is the rubbage through the heavier roadway elevation changes?

#18 ·
Mild roll of rear fenders, no rolling of front. DOES NOT rub with 1 or 2 passengers in front. With rear passengers or cargo, the rear springs are way too soft, and it will rub. New stiffer rear springs are in order for next Summer.

#20 ·
Rev,
Should be noted that the centers/faces on the CCW's stick out ~3/4-1" into that lip measurement because of how the wheels are constructed. the lip and the barrel bolt together with the center/face mounted on the outside rather than some wheels where the center in sandwiched between the lip and the barrel. while the lips are those sizes, they (visually at least) are smaller less the face thicknesses. :)

Here is the old setup on the Mistake....

Wheel Spec(size/width/offset):
ARE 16x7 25et front and rear, 1.5" lips F&R

Tire Brand/model/Spec:
Yokohama S.Drives, 195/40/16

Suspension parts:
KW V1 coils, LCR camber plates, SPC rear camber bolts

Drop and alignment spec:
Coils 3/4"(+ thickness of top spring perch) up from top of sway bar tab in the front, ~ -4to-5deg camber.
Rear Perches down 1", camber bolts maxed back at -2.5deg total camber
No rolling or flaring of ANY fenders(too lazy :p )

New setup for the spring will be as follows:

Wheel Spec(size/width/offset):
Front: 17x8 et32.5, 1.5" lip
Rear: 17x9.5 et31.5, 2" lip

Tire Brand/model/Spec:
Front: Conti-3s 195/45/17s
Rear: Conti-3s 215/40/17s

Suspension parts:
As above plus Custom rear Shock drop/spacer kits(me), Stage3 Camber and toe arms, front swaybar links.... maybe front and rear LCA's.... MAYBE!

Drop and alignment spec:
Expected similar drop as above, ~ -2.5to-3deg camber all around
fenders rolled in the front and rear, flared slightly in the rear

I can tell you this about a wagon, 9.5" wide wheel with 38mm offset is the ABSOLUTE CLOSEST you can go. I have faint rim lip wear patterns on the carpet lining in the rear of the wagon. Any closer, or added camber would rub the metal body of the car.

As for the trailing arm, 9.5" wide wheel with a 40mm offset will clear the trailing arm. I chose 38mm to be safe, and so I can add camber.

#24 ·
My measurements have the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM backspacing TO THE TRAILING ARM @ ~~ 6.9".
This does require a shock spacer and also careful choice of how far out you go as it limits your camber drastically!

#26 ·
Also different shocks are different diameters, when we're running as aggressive setups as some of us are that plays a big role. My set up was perfect for my H&R shocks but when one blew (bought used, something was wrong) I replaced with KYB AGX just as a cheap replacement. AGX's have larger diameter which required me to run a 5mm spacer to keep from hitting shock.

My set up has been posted before elsewhere but if its wanted I can post here.

195/50/15 on a 15x7.5 BBS Mahle et25. Opinions? I'm thinking Falken ZE512s, as I loved those tires on my Contour.

BTW, for those who are wondering, this would be my show set-up. My everyday set-up will be strictly for good handling/ride quality... 17x7.5 Elbrus I05 et42 with 5mm rear spacers and 215/45/17. I may move to a 225/40/17, though.
