Synthetic oil, what filter?

Im due for an oil change next week, and I've been thinking about switching to synthetic oil (Royal Purple). I usually use Fram filters but I recently found out that they don't make an XG 8316 (7,000 mile filter). And was just wondering are there any other good long lasting filters?
I found Napa has a gold filter which is comparable to the Fram, but I dont know if its actually "comparable" or they're just saying that:dunno:

Purolator, WIX, Bosch, Napa GOLD, Mobil 1 are all good quality filters. Ford only had a couple applications that required teh FL-2005, so they recently quit making it. You can still find it if you hunt hard enough. DO NOT use the FL-400 (although I'm sure that's what dealers are using now). And stay away from FRAM....very far away.

Don't use the 400S. There is no anti-drainback valve.

Get a Purolator if you need to. It's the same as the Motocraft, but it looks like they are phasing that one out as well.
which filters contain the anti-drain back? That also fit the 99 contour zetec.

There have been writeups online from people who have bought every brand of filter and took them apart, measuring the thickness of the filter paper, the number of folds, the square inches of filtering, the quality of construction, etc.

They wrote that the Fram's had the coarsest paper, least number of pleats, and least number of square inches of filtering available. Check this out:

Not sure about the Contour, but the Purolator equivalent of the FL-2005 has the valve. If you go to an auto parts store, look at their oil filter book. Look up the 01 Focus Zetec and then see equivalent filters to the FL-2005. Open those ones up and see if the valve is inside.

All the motorcraft filters (and most any quality filter) has an anti-drainback valve. It's actually just a metal tab that is attached to a spring. The differences between filters (and the difference between the FL400 and FL2005) is the oil pressure at which the spring 'opens' to allow oil to flow through the filter.

Certain filters may 'fit' the engine...meaning it screws on properly. But different engines have different oil pressure specs. The SVT engine has different specs from what the 'lower' Foci have.

What makes Fram so bad? I've used Fram on my cars with a combined total of over 300,000 miles without problem. No mechanical failures due to the engine. I can't believe that ANY company today would be putting out a "crap" product and still stay in business. Just curious.

It's not a question of "crap" product ... it's that the fram filter is made from cheaper materials. If you buy cheap oil with fram filters AND change your oil regularly at about 3000 miles, you should easily be able to rack up 100+k miles without internal failure. Using a better (and hence more expensive) filter means that you can more safely go more miles between oil changes. That's all.

There are many independent comparisons that have been made that cut open filters and compared them. I have used Fram filters in the past on vehicles without any problems, but years ago I switched to Puralator, Motorcraft and other filters because I feel that it is worth the extra protection from the better filtration capacity of those filters and I feel comfortable to extend the oil change intervals.

It's just a matter of what you feel comfortable with.

At the local Advacne store, they cut up all the types of filters they had to show that Fram is ****. They have very little filter media compared to the others. There are a few other things too. When I am there I will see if I can take a pic.

When i had my focus(es) I used hastings filters exclusively. They had two models available, one for the SVT and one for the normal zetec. the SVT one had the antidrainback feature, but both worked on either car.

Now i just use mobil 1 filters as i got sick of special ordering filters. I use motorcraft on my f150 and XR4Ti.

I'll run a Purolator but if I have the extra cash I'll run a K&N which is the best in my opinion. It is almost twice the price of most of the other filters but most of the people I know swear by them.

Fram has the worst reputation on the market for many reasons outlined above and they also do some things like use poor quality gasket materials, use a glued on cardboard end cap for the internal filter element, and their construction quality is pretty poor. Will your engine last a long time running one? Probably, but there are way better choices out there for the same price.

I just stocked up on the Motorcraft FL-2005 for my SVTF and bought out a couple of the local Wal-Mart's stock since they are being discontinued, but a regular Zetec calls for the FL-400S and that's a good filter that should still be made by Purolator to Ford specs. On my other cars I like to use NAPA Gold/Wix, the new M1 EP filters, but for the best balance between budget and filtration quality I really like the Purolator PureOne filters.

In addition there's a good study one of the Mopar guys did a few years back that he recently updated. It's not for the exact Focus-spec filter, but it should still give you some good information on what type of differences can be found between the different filter manufacturers.
