I was reading the Aug Motor Trend today and they had a little write up on a focus TDCi it was a DOT spec ZX5 with the TDCi that Ford had for testing here it the USA

the write up said that Ford is working on making the TDCi work on the high sulfur Diesel(everything else is ready for the US market, including emissions) that we have here in the USA and plans to sell it in 2004

0-60 was 9.9sec(9.4 for a 5speed ZX5 ZeTec)
38mpg overall while they had the car
they also said the car produced no smoke at all while they had it

woohoo I can't wait

After a little research.

The US Jetta TDI makes 90hp and 155ft/lbs.
100, 130 and 150HP in europe.

The Focus TDCi makes 115hp and 184ft/lbs in euro form. The TDCi in europe gets 53.4mpg Hwy.

the number for the US spec may be lower.

yes it was implied that the 38mpg figure included track testing but that highway mpg should be in the 50-60mpg range

Maybe its the crappy Diesel we have here causing the lower MPG ratings?

Yes, but as far as I know the VW's 0-60 time is about 13 secs.

Eveytime I hear MPG I think mondeo 2.0 39.4mpg Hwy The Focus will have the Duratec 2.0 next Fall. 143hp 0-60 in 8.1 Secs.

The TDCi plus a 2.0 and 2.3 Duratec HE.

with 115, 143, and 155(est)hp each a very potent combo indeed.

topped off with the 2004 SVT with >170hp.

FYI: Keep in mind that some of these sites that MPG figures that seem very high are BRITISH sites. The "imperial gallon" is more than ours and so MPG figures for most European cars in British magazines are artificially inflated... I don't know the exact conversion rate though, sorry.

update. the Focus C-Max

has an all new 1.6 and 2.0 TDCi.
1.6
108 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 176 lb-ft at only 1,750 rpm

2.0
133 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 235 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm

the Ford diesels make more power than the thier gas equivlents.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">1 UK gallon = approx 4.55 liters
1 US gallon = approx 3.79 liters

Therefore:

1 UK gallon = approx 1.20 US gallons
1 US gallon = approx 0.83 UK gallons

To convert UK to US, multiply by 4 then divide by 5, eg 40 mpg UK = 40 x 4 / 5 = 32 mpg US. To convert US to UK, multiply by 5 then divide by 4, eg 32 mpg US = 32 * 5 / 4 = 40 mpg UK.

And you thought arithmetic was a waste of time ;-)
