<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Glass tranny? never heard of that.

as for the gearing.. the WRX's gearing is rather nice i think... i've never driven one, but i've ridden in one, and it seemed to be geared fine...

now for the STi who knows, but i doubt soobie will let thier premier performance group/brand fux0r the car up.

just my opinion...

oh and just because its on supercars.net and it has the word 'production' or 'tune' in the shpeel doesnt mean its going to ever see the streets of the USA. just remember that.

i dont belive it till i see it at the autoshow with a sticker on it.

the glass tranny is a myth. You'd break your tranny doing the same things those people did.

Dont belive everything you read on nasioc. Lots of people there have been brainwahsed and think like sheep. Read up some more over there and you'll see.

Well the gearing sucks because the WRX is an economy car, belive it or not. It's geared for better MPG. sad but true

Other than the crappy cupholders and the thin paint, I love my WRX

so you're saying that all of the reports i've read about shearing gears, detonating trannies, and horrible notchiness are due to neglect? if this is so then please show me the light because i'd love to have one. i've been exposed to quite a few scoobies and have seen their strengths. it's their weaknesses i'm worried about. i must admit the nightmare stories about how the dealers treat the owners whenever a warrenty claim comes up has kinda put me off as well.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">How can you destory your tranny, while operating it normally?

Not as easy as those other guys have. They were using upgraded turbos, nitrous, insane amounts of boost. You name it they did it. And to their surprize when something broke, they took everything off of their cars, and brought them back to the dealership, to claim warranty on "broken and crappy parts" from normal use.

There is a case here in Hawaii, where someone did this 3 times, and got away with it. It happens all the time, SOA finally realized they were getting duped, and came down with an iron fist on warranty claims. That's why dealers are strict now. Makes sense if you think about it.

I've gotten worse service from Ford dealers than from Subaru dealers. I look back at owning my focus, and think, what the hell was I thinking buying that car...but anyway, that's a different story altogether

Im pretty sure, wherever your from 03 WRX's are probably priced to go, since the 04's are out. Well at least here they are.

Ill agree with Kawshon. If you really no how to properly operate your tranny within a reasonable HP range, your completly fine. But there are a lot of people out putting insane HP figures (350+) and leaving the tranny stock. If you going to spend 5-10k in serious engine mods, you would be a moron to leave the tranny as is. There is a reason MRT sell upragraded to race trannies. Plus i think if youve got enough power to shear gears and you have the audacity to try and claim a warranty repair, you deserve to get declined.Thats just ruins it for us people who are a bit mroe level headed.

Ihad nothing but excellent experiance with Subaru in Warranty work-On a car with mods.

(On a side note i was just denied a warranty timing belt repair on my focus due to my focus sport cam gears which were pro. installed supossedly prematurely wearing my belt.360 bucks)

The previous posters were very accuate. The stock tranny on a WRX is a very fine piece of work. Not the best but far from the worst. It was designed to handle about 227-275hp. by the engineers. If you mod your engine, tune it to 400hp (it can be done) run the tach up to say 5k and drop your clutch...guess what is going to blow up? You got it. The tranny.
The STi is a different tranny. It was made specifically for the STi. 6 spd. Harder steel etc. If you do not like the gearing of the STi spring for the STi Type RA. Those gears are way shorter. You have to hit 3rd before 60. Most other cars gear 1st/2nd to get a good 0-60 time and are not optimized to get the best performance out of the engine/gearing.
SCC mag did a very good article on this subject several months back.
Cheers.

From the article:
Producing 276 bhp in standard tune at 6,500rpm, whilst delivering a class-topping 289 lb ft of torque at 3,500rpm. By adopting a 6-speed close ratio gearbox, maximum response from the engine and transmission is retained throughout the broad powerband.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Wait a minute now. They're trying to tell us that the close ratio gearbox takes advantage of the broad powerband? What are they trying to pull? The reason it has a 6-speed box is most likely completely marketing-driven. Any knucklehead knows that you don't want close gearing with a broad powerband.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">i was thinking more along the line of a vishnu stage 1 at most. the majority of the money i would spend would be on suspension and brake upgrades.

It's a different animal, try to drive one in anger (meaning autocross of course) before you buy.
