Either is just fine. The 5W-20 is less preferable as the engine gets more miles, but when new, the factory uses the 5W-20 to increase the car's gas mileage by the TINIEST Smidgen. This raises the mileage of their overall fleet to compensate for the SUV's so they can meet the Federal Requirements.
I wouldn't worry AT ALL, nor would I hesitate to use 5W-30. It was the recommended oil for the 2000's, w/ the very same engine.

The dealership put 5W-30 oil in my car..........why?

the manual says to put 5W-20.

I thought maybe it has something to do with the climate here in IL right now (very cold)

ya got any guesses as to why they would put 5W-30 in it?

I also run 5/30W on my car. I live in MN and I think climate between here and IL is pretty much the same.

I have the same oil from when the car was new, 60,000 miles ago. Runs great!

38,000 hard driving miles on my 2000 with JRSC and a bunch of other mods using Mobil 1 5W-30. Great stuff, wouldn't dust civics without it.
