The Next Duratec Part From Marcy Motorsport Will Be...

I've been doing a little more tinkering in the shop lately, and I feel like it's time to get back to work on something new for the Duratec. Obviously, there is still some desire to improve the performance of the Duratec Focus, or there would be no market for things like camshafts or turbocharger kits. There are a two things in particular that I'm looking at seriously, and I would like to present them here and judge interest in each.

The first thing is the Duratec Inlet Manifold. I have been working on some possibilities for a fabricated Duratec manifold, with the Gen-I prototype on the race car already and the Gen-II in the works. The thing of it is, before I go much farther with the Gen-II, I want to determine if I should make it acceptable for production or just a race piece. The advantage to this project is the minimal amount of outsourcing and reduced costs through in house fabrication and welding. Translation: We would not need much demand to get this into production. The big question is how much demand is there for a fabricated bolt-on street manifold with a price point somewhere South of the current offerings.

Moving on to the other item we could possibly get into production would be the 2-3/4" (70mm) Exhaust systems. Of course, this would require a bit more commitment to get into production, but with some adjustments to the actual production, like final welding and making the hangers in-house, we could potentially reduce the production cost a bit and keep the initial commitment point for production to around 10 units. Again, the question here is if the demand exists, and then would 10 brave souls want to commit to this kit.

The thing is, I can only procede with of one of the two at the moment. I'm leaning heavily towards the inlet manifold. I hope the majority of you agree.

Walter, you know I am waiting to jump on a Intake Manifold. I was excited about the Cossie version for the 2.0 when you told me about it 3 months ago, but they are dragging their feet. I would be willing to sign up to that part!

If I can get a tune that will work with my junk (focussport xcal2), and the beastie isn't too obscene in price, I'm very interested too. I know that the stuff you make is good, so I would love to see one come into production (since the 2.0 cosworth is taking so long).

I would of course need pricing information and performance gain projections (as well as the tuning junk!), but this seems interesting.

Walter I would love to see a torque-strong alternative to Cosworth's intake mani! Build it, post some numbers & am a potential consumer!

Not to mention between Cosworth & Draxas the exhaust headers are pretty well covered, and exhaust pipes have a number of different manufacturers available.

Another vote for an intake mani. While I'll admit it would be really cool looking to have a "Cosworth" badge under my hood, I'd get over that *really* quickly if you could offer a better alternative at a better price.

Exhaust...dunno, seems like we've got lots of those.

The exhaust thing is great for new car owners, but the manifold would fair more
interest to me and us guys that have exhausts and are looking for an alternative
to the Cossie-no low end tq. manifold.I will be in eventually, once you get the
manifold in production.

A streetable, trackable torque loss free intake manifold would be sweet.

Dang it, I new this would happen. We had enough people before to get the 2.75" exhaust started, and it was a no go. So thinking that you would never make one, I had to shell out over $700 for the Cossie exhaust. Not that I'm complaining about the Cosworth exhaust. I love the quality and sound of it, but I could have saved a grib of money for something else. Sorry, I'm just venting right now because I really wanted your exhaust before. But it's good to see that you are coming back and making parts for us again :)

Since I had a hunch this would be the response, I guess I sould give a few points of interest for the Gen-II design. The manifold will be a lightweight tubular construction with a good size plenum and mandrel bent tubes. The throttle body flange will allow for a new 75mm throttle body, the largest available on a Duratec, and currently in testing on my race car. The throttle body specs will come later because they are going to be important, but they are not relevant now, since an adapter will be bolted to the base flange that will accept the stock Focus throttle body.

I'll post the engineering drawings in a few days.

Tell us more about this manifold... Last I heard, your experimental intake manifold was a race-only part because it had even shorter runners than the Cosworth piece. Are you looking into longer runners for a better street part?

Definately interested in an intake manifold that will maintain my low end torque. How much south of the current offering are you shooting for? Just curious so I can make sure and start stashing money in my Paypal for it. I'll shoot for the crane cams and the manifold at the same time which will be a nice little addition to my D20.

The Mazda TB pattern is the same as the Focus pattern, meaning this part should fit the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, the Fusion, and other FWD Duratec engines. The biggest difference and a cost point will be that cars with throttle cables have idle speed control motors, and cars with fly-by-wire do not which would reuce the cost for those applications. The Gen-I on the car and the Gen-II to follow use the 75mm TB, which has a provision for the idle speed control motor on it, and thus reduced the manifold cost by not requiring the idle speed circuit or the TB adapter plate. The Gen-II will have longer curved runners for improved torque, and to fit the unit in the limited space available. The manifold will fit the 2.0L and the 2.3L and hopefully it will support 240-260hp naturally aspirated.

Walter, I am very interested in this, but my only concern is the Power steering fluid reservoir that us 06 owners had moved on us. Will this be shaped to account for this, or am I going to have to relocate?

I am definately in either way, but if you could make it work the with 06's and no modification you would become my new best friend...keep us posted

manifold

and also a name brand header

i just don't trust that draxas will be around in 2 or 3 years

I still drool over Walter's prototype header. Sometimes I have dreams in which MM's restructuring allows him to build a small run of them. ;)

I'm very interested in this new manifold, and eagerly awaiting the drawings (not that I'll understand them)

I'm very interested in the 75MM TB with the Intake Mani.Would I be correct in
noting that this combo will only increase power significantly with the addition
of cams and or FI?

Walter you know that I'm waiting for an alternate IM, but a big header is atop my list. I know the R&D and production on the header is more intence, but it will likely be my next purchase.
