toms turbo kit

3672 Views 30 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  1turbofocus
hey im looking to buy toms turbo kit but had some questions and was wondering what kind of whp would i be looking to get with the mods i have after adding his kit? Also what kind of times would i run in the quarter mile? I'm also debating on whether or not adding a turbo is more than what i am anticipating it to be. how fast is it actually and by that i mean what is it comparable to? mustang gt? camaro? cobra? thanks

well with my current setup a relatively stock mustang or Z28 really is a walk in the park. A cobra or a ram-air or SS give me a good run for my money, but depending on the driver, I can run withem no problem.

PS, when I said cobra, I by no means meant a new SC car. I got my ass waxed by one of them badboys!

I can hang w/ 5.0's all day w/ 7psi.

A camaro? Mabey an auto...Those LS1's are not slow.

I beat a vet at the track (on video). I was on 14psi and race gas, turns out it was an auto
But when I shifted to 4th and saw he was still next to me, I was like

Yea seriously, SS's are quicker than most other high powered factory beasts out there other than the 03 cobra.

No offense zx3focusguy, but I HIGHLY doubt that you're running with no problems against 99 and up (?) SS's or Ram air pontiacs (wait..those are LS1's right?). Even mildly skilled drivers or automatics would offer some problem in the 1/4.

Any LS1 powered car will pass with ease. They trap anywhere from 105 to 108 mphs easily STOCK!

LT1powered cars (i think 98 and below? may be wrong but around there) on the other hand I think you could definitely take with your power.

Again, nothing personal to you zx3focusguy. Believe me, I'm much impressed with your car. Very nice work so far and I hope to see more out of it.
on pump gas and with your mods, you'll see anywhere from 200 whp to a claimed 240 or so whp at 8 psi.

You'll handily walk on stock mustang gt's.

LS1 powered GM's (camaro, pontiac), Mustang Mach1's and Cobras will easily walk you in the 1/4.
ok so none of you have posted your actual times. if you dont want o post your exact times how about +- .5 of a second from it. the only reason i ask is cause i wanna know what a 200 to 240 hp focus does.

Tom's SVT Turbo Focus doing about 290whp ran a 12.9.

Dude, my sig says 13.9(5) at 103mph

That was on street tires, 14psi, 110 octane, prob around 240hp. 100* AZ heat. Its also a sedan in street trim

It trapped 105 when it was cold out.

ok but yours is the only one, there is other things that could make others faster/slower and i was wondering what the average/general times were. so thank you for yours and what about others?

tom would you like to share your input on what a ford focus is comparable to please?

so your saying that a new cobra and and ls1 camaro are going to walk all over me? what does toms kit do in the quarter mile stock? ls1 camaros run like 13s i think i read somewhere.how much whp in a focus would it take to keep up with an ls1 camaro? i ask this because there is a guy i work with that has a friend that bought an ohio state cop car that is an ls1 camaro and hes claiming that no focus can ever have a better quarter mile time. supposedly its all stock from the factory. this guy preaches about the saying "no replacement for displacement" why are you guys thoughts about that? what is the most horsepower toms kit will put out?
GENERALLY, a Focus putting out 200 whp will reach a HIGH 90's trap...anywhere from 98 to possibly 100 mph. A Focus putting out around 240 whp will trap anywhere from 103 to 105 mph.

Remember, this is all generally. There are other factors that would effect e.t.s and speeds but GENERALLY, trap speeds will be around these.

As for Tom's kit and the 1/4, referring to one customer's car, and the engine being for the most part stock (maybe exhaust and possibly other minor mods), I've seen 13.6 @ 105. Oh and street tires
But I haven't seen any other times other than that. The guy was at I THINK 12 psi, putting down 237 whp and tq to match. And I think that's on race gas.

LS1's...you'll need to putting down close to 300 whp to compete with a STOCK LS1. And by that point, you better get some drag radials at least. The guy's generally correct with the "no replacement for displacement" concept. It's pretty obvious though...the more air you flow, the greater potential for power output.

Tom's turbo kit in terms of potential is quite high from what has been seen on this board. There's good, quality components in the kit. But you can't put an exact limit or whatever on the kit. You can't do that with any turbo setup.

Keep up the research. I know you're trying to get as much info as you can. Keep it up!

wait a minute though. tom claims 230 to 250 at 8 psi so why would this guy get 237 at 12 psi and on race fuel? doesnt make sense to me. tom should help us out here on times and such.

like someone else mentionned.. lots of factors come into play.. different effenciency probably

98 and up are LS1, 97 and older are LT1. Trust me, I work on these ram airs all the time, there nothing special. (work for pontiac dealer) with my boost turned up with good gas, I have no problems. Come down take a ride.
Now the 1/4 may be different, around here we only have 1/8 mile, top end a LS1 WILL outrun me guaranteed.
Ok 93 will do from 200 to 230 HP at the wheels

As for times there is some running in the mid to upper 13`s in the 1/4 ,I allways would like to see 100Oct fuel used why at the track just for safety

There are a lot of factors that go into what it will run so it is hard to say but it will run in the 13`s

Tom
basically if you are looking for really low times then why ask? tom's is the best... the only way you could be faster is with a v8 conversion
See less See more
I dont know that a V8 would be faster there still hasent been one run quicker than a 12.54 @ 115
