Well we have been wanting a new shop racecar for sometime now at Top Speed. And of course, we decided what better than a Focus. So about a month ago we acquired a slightly damaged 2004 Zetec ZX4 Automatic car. (yes i said auto, we will get to that a little later).

The car has approx. 120k miles on it, interior was in good shape and no structural damage. Basically could have been turned into a nice driver for someone. But I am not interested in that, I want a dedicated drag racing machine.

We are going to do this build in steps, just how most customers end up doing their own builds. Expect the full build to go on for months if not years, however, we plan on getting it to the track before the end of the year to at least run it on a mild build.

Our plans for the first part of the build are as follows:

  • Gut car and install appropriate safety equipment
  • Install our GT Street turbo kit with GT2871R Turbocharger
  • Install our Prototype Traction Bar system
  • New Torque Converter
  • New Differential
  • M/T 24.5/8/15 ET Drag Slicks
  • Retain Stock Engine
We are planning on dialing this car in on around 250whp for the first step in this build. We will be taking to the track on a regular basis and plan on running it in some local bracket races.

Stay tuned for more updates and pictures! You can also check out this build on our website.

(as a bonus we will be weighing every part that is removed and documenting the weights on our website for informational purposes, no more he said she said about what things weigh)

Just fyi - 2000-2004 = LX/SE/SE Sport/ZTS, there was no ZX4 until they screwed up the nomenclature in '05-'07.

Looks awesome and you have a standard SE, in very chill Grabber Green, on your hands.

What made you go with the sedan instead of the zx3?

very cool. it's also very appreciated that you're going to the trouble of weighing parts and sharing the data!

bryan lets run them heads up

The parts that we removed so far weigh in the neighborhood of 133lbs, however, we do have to put a hood back on the car, (which will probably fiberglass or carbon) We have not gotten around to weighing the seats, carpet, insulation and that kind of thing yet. (there will be another significant weight savings there.)

Which is why paying to have the heater core/blower assembly changed is super expensive.

I don't know if the torque convertor needs done, unless it's for the a higher stall, the valve body is where the benefits and weakness shows in the stock trans.

Fun project

We are more interested in the higher stall. Pretty much we are going for 250whp this first round, and are going to see how the transmission does with just what we can change in the tune. If we have problems then we know we need to change something, if we have no problems, then even better.

I see you have been busy while I am at work. Thats pretty good power for a stock atx even with no exhaust
