Treated very fairly by my insurance co...

About 5 months ago, I was in an accident that totalled a new S2 with about 125 miles on it. For details about the accident, just fish up the thread entitled "Good news and bad news about my brand new S2".

I was found to be 100 percent at fault (this pretty much happens automatically if you rear-end a stopped vehicle on the freeway, no matter what the circumstances). It was a fairly serious accident -- two totalled vehicles and two people (slightly) injured. I figure that my insurance company payed out something like 25K in claims.

Well, I just got my insurance renewal statement the other day. I cringed as I opened the envelope, expecting to see a huge jump in my premium. Much to my surprise, however, the insurance premium increased only slightly. Furthermore, according to the insurance statement, I still qualify for the "good driver" discount! (I'm not sure why this is the case, but I'm not going to complain!)

In case you are wondering, my insurance co. is Wawanesa. Not only were they very fair in covering my own loss (they depreciated the car by 30 cents/mile times the 125 miles that I drove it), but they didn't stick me with a big premium hike.

Wawanesa's a pretty picky company -- if you are under 25, or have any tickets/accidents within the last 3 years, or drive a "high-performance" or off-road vehicle, they may not want to insure you. But for folks here with clean driving records, I'd recommend that you check out Wawanesa (based upon my own personal experiences with them). For me, the premiums have always quite reasonable, and they treated me very fairly when I filed a claim.

I've been with them since I was about 30 years old (I'm now in my mid 40's). The post-accident insurance premium for my S2 is $546/year for $500 deductible collision/comprehensive, 250K/500K bodily injury liability, 100K property damage. I guess that's one of the (few) advantages of old age.

Hmmmm... shouldn't folks my age be driving Buick Park Avenues instead of Focus hatchbacks?

Sounds good. We are looking at new insurance now, we are unhappy with Auto Club but have been unable to find anything cheaper since both my wife and I have one at-fault accident each (but no tickets). Auto Club is charging us like $1800/yr and the cheapest cometing rate so far was $1200/6 Mos.

BTW, the reason you are still called a "good driver" is because you have no more than 1 accident or 1 ticket, if you got in any other accidents or got any tickets you would no longer be considered a "statutory good driver".

Actually, with my insurance co., the rate is set in stone for 12 months. According to my renewal notice (for coverage through Feb 21, 2003), the cost to insure my S2 is $546. I have $250K/500K bodily injury coverage, $100K property damage, $500 collision/comprehensive deductible.

It looks like I got a "free pass" on this one..
