my car went to the shop this evening to have a turbo kit installed and im worried sick. i dont know much about turbos. and worst of all im not sure of how knowledgable my mechanic is. everyone in the area says hes the best at turboing vehicles but ive never seen any of his work. i dont know what to expect. i just hope it holds up til i get it down to Tom in a few months without damaging anything. i dont know if i made the right decision letting this guy do the work. he gave me a good price though. hes gonna custom bend a 2.5 in exhaust with high flow cat and flexpipe, install camgears, fuel rail, gauges, turbo timer, and the turbo kit itself for 800. thats a good price right??
do i really have anything to worry about, afterall the kit came with a driveable base tune.
im sure hes good at installing turbos but everyone in his shop laughed at me when i told him i wanted to turbo my focus. im sure hes turboed lots of civics and integras. how much different could it be?
:dunno:

There are all sorts of tricks on different vehicles for turbo's and the correct way of doin it. I'd say keep it out of boost before you go and see tom. better safe then sorry.

and what about maintinence schedules. i know you have to use different oil but what about oil changes? do you have to change it more often? how often do you have to change the copper spark plugs that cfm sells for boosted non svts? and are they pregapped? i have so many questions but cant remember most of them. lol

and what exactly is a boost spike that im supposed to watch for. the manufacturer of my kit said just watch for boost over the preset 8psi. and boost spikes.

i think i should have learned more about this stuff before i decided to jump into it like this.

so if its set for 8psi. a boost spike would be if it gets past 8psi is what i think your saying. is this right?

well now i find out that i have to delete the a/c. it would have been nice to know this before i bought the kit. anyway... its still in the shop. might be done today. might not be.

if you're only running a 2.5" dp, you shouldn't have to delete the ac....theres a guy on here w/a svt that was able to custom make a 3" dp and still keep his ac...not saying it was a easy task, but it was done : )

yeah but its a litlle more dificult with my setup due to me not having a turbo manifold. i have a set of shorty headers with an adapter. the turbos set pretty low and the whole design for the adapter would have to be changed too. the adapter would have to be slanted down and i really dont feel like ordering a bunch of new stuff. so im just gonna delete the a/c for now and try to get it resolved later on down the road.

5-8psi on even a crumby tune should be alright for a little while... just be easy on it untill you get down to see tom...

who is tuning it or are you running the base tune from the kit?

ill be runnining the base tune til i get to toms. but it will probably be a few months before i can make it down there.

yeah. i know. and i agree its gonna be a lil hard. but i think id rather have my car not blown up

you should be ok then... just set the boost controller low and you wont have to worry about it... if the kit has a controller... if not, you can pick one up for about $50 for a manual controller

should i leave it at 8psi? thats what the base map is for.

or should i just turn it down to 6 or7 or so?

i'd personally turn it down... but thats cause i dont trust base tuning from turbo kits...

then again... if its setup for 8... you might aswell run it at that...

contact the company and ask their opinion since they do advertise it as a base driveable tune.

the company told me that some of the people that buy the kit never get another tune and jsut run it at 8 psi with the base tune permenantly

then run it at 8psi... and be easy on it till you get down to see tom...

thats what i'd do neways
