ive been using the search function alot lately and have come up with mixed results.
i get ppl telling their race gas hp and times. since im not planning on beening a drag racer nor do i have access to 110 octance, i would like to know what is possible with 90-93 octance gas, with a stock egine and fuel system, with any turbo system. mostly tom's kit.
what would any turbo get me too in the 1/4?
big turbos = big peak power. corect?
but the big turbo's lack the lower end power leaving you with no better time slips. dont u also need race gas for these bigger turbos like the t3/t4. also i am completely new to forced induction and am probably completely wrong.
i just want to know how much faster a turbo would make my stock car.
From my limited "knowledge" of forced induction...big turbo do make HUGE power, but the lag grows exponentially as the turbo gets bigger, kinda meaning that the power comes on pretty hard and sudden...which I believe would roast tires in like the first 3 gears in a front-drive car. I think that most turbo kits for the ZX3 get them to about 220fwhp at about 8psi or so on 93 (I think), so theres room for more power. There are a ton of boosted Foci riding around this board and I'm sure they'll chime in.
From what I've heard, some people say that a T3/T4 is too big a turbo for a 4-cylinder...but if Tom is using it, it must work pretty well...w/ a good balance between lag and power. Tom's kit has huge potential based on availibility of higher octane fue. I know his SVT is running 12.99 in the quarter and making something like 313hp...and his ZX3 is making well over 440hp, when he wants to anyway. Check out his website Focus-Power.
If you';re looking to make big power then his kit is the way to go. I know he definintely will tune the car to your exact specs (as long as its not going to blow up)...so if you want to make XXXhp w/ XX-octane then he can most likely get you there. Thats whats so great about his kit.
I have people all the time tell me that there is NO high Oct fuel around and i have never see where after they looked they didnt find some Oct is our friend and if you want high power you have to use high Oct
I'm still not understanding why other 4 cylinder motors [w/no high tech stuff as with our Zetec] can have turbo apps installed and run relatively high numbers using pump gas while we with Zetecs can't.
I asked you [Tom] this question but never got any true reply.
I remember you mentioning the design of the Zetec is simply not friendly to pump octane powered turbo apps but I'm really really wondering what the differences are or what design elements in the Zetec hold it back from being able to hold boost w/93 or 94 octane.
Now I stress 93 or 94 octane because I KNOW that FI apps need that at least. I would understand 89 octane or something not being enough but 93 or 94 I don't get.
Thats a good question...because there are more than a handful of motors that a churning out +150-200hp after boosting w/ basically the same mods as anyone here can do (lower compression, more boost...etc). The first issue of SCC I bought was the Sept 2001 issue...headlined: 400-HP CLUB...amde up of an Integra, Eclipse, 200SX and a freaking Miata...all pushing at least 392hp at the wheels. I'm not too sure if any of them were running juice, but the Integra was pushing 500HP!!! And these are daily drivers!!! So how come making a 500HP Zetec daily driver is like trying to melt the polar ice caps with a hairdryer??? (Alittle exaggerated...I know)???
lot of people go FI so that they dont have to buy nitrous and refill the bottle.. I expect a turbo to not require the same type of refill with "special" gas (race gas)..
Pump here have 87-89 and 91.. some have 92-93-94 but thats as much as we'll get ..and I wouldnt plan on going to the airport to fill up my car everytime i want ot "push" the car a little.. its not just a drag racing car afterall..
If I had to get my car tuned.. it would probably be tuned for 91oct and maybe 94 since we have it around.. not 110oct
You could probably get a 300-400 hp daily-driven Focus, but I think the question is what are you willing to pay for this. When you see 'Tegs and such in SCC or any other mag, you hear figures like $80k being thrown around for those 300-400 hp daily drivers. Granted that has to do a lot with those guys havin' 20 grand in body mods, but nearly anything is possible with enough money.
