I have this VIN listed below and the car has a 16 valve ztec engine. Why do they ask VIN 3 or P. Which digit they referring to?
1FAF P 351W236109

I thought it was the 5th digit but what other posted I read it seems backwards?
3 = Zetec
P = STI

The engine code is digit in the eighth spot., not the fifth. The rest of the answer is correct.
3 = Zetec
P = STI

N = Duratec (from 2004 and later)

You're missing 2 character in the VIN you provided. They should be 17 characters long.
You have provided a short VIN. In my opinion, The VIN is actually a code that contains a lot of information about your car. Each digit in the VIN corresponds to a specific piece of information, such as the model year, engine type, and manufacturing plant. In this case, the 3 or P digit you're referring to is actually the 10th digit in the VIN, which represents the model year. As for why they ask for the 3 or P, it's because those are the specific codes that correspond to the Zetec and STI engines, respectively. So if you're trying to identify which engine your car has, you'll want to look at the 8th digit in the VIN for the engine code. In your case, it sounds like you have a Zetec engine, which corresponds to the 3 code.
There is NO STI, only SPI (split port induction).

The engine code is the 8th digit of VIN.
