Wheel Bearing Seal - Still needed?

I had to replace my rear wheel bearing a couple of weeks ago, and the replacement kit I got no longer comes with the rubber and metal o-ring seal. It's still shown on the exploded view of the rear hub assembly on the computer at the dealership, but no longer available for sale.

The service guy told me that I should no longer need this since it's a sealed bearing unit. The new bearing is identical to the old one, which still had the seal. (The old one was already replaced as a recall, and failed exactly 1 year, 1 month later). My experience with sealed bearings is that "dirt gets in, can't get out", so I'm a little wary about this.

So, do I still need this o-ring? I used the old one, but it's a bit damaged from being removed and re-installed, so I was thinking of replacing it. But it looks like I can't, since it's no longer available from Ford.

Also, can anyone tell me details about the rear wheel bearing recall? What exactly was changed as part of this recall? I'm starting to wonder if they didn't change a damn thing, and if the bearing I replaced was still the original part, since the seal that was still on there is no longer available from ford. Suspicious...

there were two wheel bearing recalls. tell me your vin and i can see if both were done. one was to tap a hole and put a little bolt in a cap on the left rear bearing, and the other was for replacement of all the wheel bearings in the back... they are fairly old recalls now though, don't see too many come in for that anymore.

:arr:I stacked 2 40mm orings in place of the double lip seal. Pryed out the old metal shield and sensor ring and tapped them onto the new drum. We'll see how long this works. Motion industries wont reopen til after christmas so here goes a rig job. Ford was clueless, busy. NAPA was similar. Thanks Focaljet for the clues.

I am getting ready to do the wheel bearings on my 02 wagon and I was also wondering about this. Some dealerships are telling me it is required, some telling me it is not available. Some parts stores say it doesn't exist, or that it is an ABS sensor seal not a wheel seal. Lots of mis-information out there

There is a stamped steel 'cap' that goes over the hub (part of the drum casting) after the wheel-bearing and related components have been installed. It has a black ring on it. This is called a 'tone-ring' and it is only required for ABS. If you don't have ABS, you do not need it. The ring is what the ABS sensor reads to detect wheel-rotation. I remember it being referred to as a seal when I did my rear bearings.

So, there is nothing in there to keep the brake dust away from the bearing then?
I mean, obviously the bearing is a sealed unit in itself, but I thought there was an extra seal in there to keep the dust away from the seal on the bearing.

I'm pretty sure this how-to shows all the right parts, should be the same for disc and drum. The assembly goes bearing, snap ring, water seal carrier, abs ring if equipped and then a rubber seal on the spindle. I believe all cars after 02 or so should have all of these parts and the rubber seal should not have to be replaced unless it is missing or damaged somehow.

I'm still pretty confused because there is an exploded view of the rear brake assembly from the parts dept. that shows everything broken out but the rubber seal I got does not appear correct (p/n 1m5z-1s175-ac). I suspect that my car may be missing it but guess I'll find out when I pull it apart.

Believe me, that rubber seal gets damaged... Between a little bit of rust and the heat from a bad bearing, the things practically fall apart. I've been there and done that. I got the last one from the local Ford dealer in town and they told me that they'd been discontinued 3 years ago when I did the driver's rear bearing and drum.

I need to find one too because the right side will need to be replaced soon.
