Ford insisted that there are two idlers for the timing belt (plus the tensioner). I just looked up the NAPA timing kit and it shows the two idlers too.
Anybody know what I'm supposed to do with the second one (other than take it back to the dealership for a refund)? I've got the belt off and it's kind of tough to miss a pulley that it touches. I checked to see if it matched up with the accessory belt ilder pulley and it's not even close.
Here's the NAPA picture (if it works):



The tensioner is the center pulley and the one on the right is the obvious idler pulley. The one on the left is the one that I can't figure out what to do with.
Any help is appreciated since I'm putting this thing back together with or without that pulley.


Only thing I can figure is it's somehow related to the Escort/ZX2/Contour(?) with VCT on the exhaust pulley. Maybe???

I bet you have at least 1 of the 3 pieces of the timing belt cover, maybe even two.
Kind of need that middle section or else the motor mount would have nothing to attach to.


The whole front of my motor is open right now. Timing belt is off, new idler and tensioner are on. Swapping cam gears and the intake cam tomorrow, then putting it all back together with a UDP. Ahh, the joys of the FJ classifieds with the install accelerated by a totally shot timing belt. Thank you Ford for this non-interference motor!!!!

well, there is an idler pulley that attaches to the timing cover. But that pulley is for the accesory belt.
looks like the one in the pic too. Freebie?

Freebie nothing! They charged me $38.something for it and list was about $54! They'd better take it back. The bag is unopened and they already had it in stock so I should be set. Now if I can just find that second cam seal I bought.... Only $5 and change for that one, but I already have to return one thing so I might as well try to take it back.
