MAFterburner™ is a system which allows the owner to tune his/her air-fuel ratio in 400 RPM increments from idle to redline. This allows the owner to optimize the air fuel ratio for best power throughout the operating range of the engine using a laptop computer. There are two separate tables to allow the tuning in both open loop (wide open throttle) and closed loop (part throttle cruise) situations. The software is user friendly and allows the operator to make quick adjustments in real time, while driving or on a chassis dyno.
The MAFterburner™ allows the user to fine tune his/her car and accommodate larger injectors, aftermarket mass air meters, and many other part modifications.
The MAFterburner™ is programmed via a serial-connection to any host laptop or desktop computer running at least Windows 98. The graphical tuning utility suite, called MAFCOMM™, is incredibly flexible and easy to use. This software facilitates the user in programming air/fuel changes in 1% increments over 400rpm intervals from idle to redline (400-10,000rpm) in both WOT and idle or part-throttle cruise conditions. Once the tuning is complete, the host computer is disconnected, and the MAFterburner™ runs "stand-alone" in conjuction with the PCM.
This device monitors engine speed via the PCM's coil-driver outputs, throttle position sensor (TPS) voltage, and the mass-air flow sensor voltage (MAF). At a speed of over twenty times per second, the on-board signal processor samples these signals, reads a target air/fuel correction from one of the user-programmable data tables, calculates a new target air/fuel ratio and outputs the "corrected" MAF signal to the PCM.
The MAFterburner™ has the capability to accurately read engine speed regardless of ignition system type. In fact, the internal speed sensing electronics have been thoroughly tested on Ford "Waste Spark", Coil-on-Plug, and 4/6/8 cylinder EDIS style ignition systems.
The MAFterburner™ has "Real-time" data logging capabilities as well as the ability to export/import the air/fuel correction maps to/from a file.
STAGE1: Single-bank of air/fuel maps. This device has two tables, Open-loop 1 (OL1) and Closed-loop 1 (CL1). The MAFterburner™ can switch back and forth between tables based on a fully-programmable wide-open throttle breakpoint voltage. This allows for different air/fuel maps for both WOT and part-throttle driving conditions.
STAGE2: Dual-bank air/fuel maps. This device has two banks of two tables (4 total). They are Open-loop 1 (OL1), Closed-loop 1 (CL1), Open-loop 2 (OL2), and Closed-loop 2 (CL2). The MAFterburner™ automatically switches back and forth between open-loop and closed-loop tables, within a specified bank, based on a fully-programmable wide-open throttle breakpoint voltage.
The user can switch banks "on-the-fly" using an external toggle/rocker/blade type switch. The STAGE2 kit comes with the bank select harness but no switch is included. This allows the user to select the switch that best matches their interior motif and helps keep the cost of the kit down.
The MAFterburner™ STAGE2 (PLUS for SHM brand) device also has a built-in RPM "window" switch and WOT switch to be used for intelligent and safe nitrous kit control. This output switch has the capability to sink 0.25A of continuous current. It is protected against inductive kick-back and can therefore directly drive most standard 30A automotive relays.
You tell me what chip could display it on a screen and allow you to adjust it for under $400? There are so many benefits, and i ask that people stop knocking on the Mafterburner untill they see it in action. I beleive that the money i spent on it was well worth it.
Yes if you install bigger injectors you may need a chip, but you do not need a MAF calibrated for the injectors.
Go look at the price of a RPM window switch for a nitrous system, and tell me how much it cost....... I found one on the NOPI web site made by NOS for $199. If you bought the Mafterburner stage 2 it has RPM activated window switch. So lets total that up, $199 for a RPM window switch and $189 for a new MAF. You have now bought the mafterburner stage 2 with just those two items.
Now, if you are using the stock MAF and it is pegged out then you need a new MAF anyways. The Mafterburner can benefit alot of people on here.
I just read that the mafterburner is now adjustable in 40rpm intervsls now. It also has a built in calculator to help you determine what adjustments to make to get your A/F where you want it.
That is about the most info i can give right now......Russell
