I never joined, because i thought that it was mostly cobras, would i be correct to say so?

The regional director puts the SVT Focus down every chance he gets, but people like Jason (Ataru) make up for it.
As you can see at the Tulsa Tuesday Cruise-in, there are more Focus than Cobra or Lightnings. I think they start back up again the end of March. This is NOT a SVTOAOK event, but it is totally worth joining.

It really depends on the area you're in. Some local chapters are sedate. Other chapters, like mine (SVTOA-Toronto) , we are very active with lots of events and such.
From general meetings:

To other social events (like barbeques):

Oh...and yeah, the On Track Performance Driving Clinic:

SVTOA is open to anyone with an SVT or Ford/Ford family vehicle. Ultimately, everyone is a Ford performance enthusiast. We're privileged to have the continuing full support of the Ford Motor Company and everyone involved (from the staff at SVTOA and the volunteers that run the chapters.
As for the RD who puts down the SVTF...I'm sure he's drooling over a T-Red Contour SVT that can do some off-road acrobatics
