I don't even know what to say. I only knew him through pm but he was always extremely helpful with any question I had and I appreciate that more than I can say.

Thanks Gary, R.I.P
My thoughts exactly.
My sympathies to his family and fellow jetters he called friends.

It was my priviledge and great honor to know Gary for the better part of the last ten years or so. I met him at Bridgehampton, where I watched him struggle with the Volvo he was running at the time. Man was that car a piece de turd. First the steering column locked at the exit of the Lightbulb, putting him into the berm. Later, his frikkin' roll cage caught fire. That is not a typo - the roll cage started to burn. It turned out that ALL of the electric for that misbeggotten beast was wired through the hot lead for the brake lights, which was in turn taped to the cage. It finally began to smolder, and as they say, a great friendship was born.

When Gary got the Focus and began racing again four years ago I was thrilled to see him in a reliable race car for a change, out there running hard and having fun. He told me about his activities on this board, and I began dropping in. I've even met a few of you in person. The great things Gary had to say about his friends from this BB were wonderful - trust me, you gave as much to him as he gave to you.

I'll miss Gary - I'll miss the books (he clued me into library 25 cent sales), the obscure Python quotes, the stories about life in a rock and roll band, life as a history teacher, life in the exotic car business (and even just selling Fords), and life in general. If there is a heaven, they had better brace themselves for him - it's going to be an interesting time when he arrives.

This thread is wonderful, and I will certainly make sure that his family sees it - I know they will appreciate all of the sentiments.

That is terrible to hear. Rest in Peace big guy. Thanks for all of your input on the boards and I really wish I could have met you in person. :(

It is always the good ones... :(

Edit: After reading MichaelXi's post below mine... I feel a few more :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( are in order.

Such a sad year for the FJ community... but we will continue, and carry on like normal. Life is precious, and especially being the Christmas season, it makes it that much more difficult.

He was One of the BEST.
If he Had it, he'd Share it.
I regret that life circumstances kept me from being available to crew for him, but the two track weekends that we hung out will be forever cherished.

As I understand it, Hal is Handling/will Handle the FJ Contributed Media.
I HOPE that I'm not accidentaly Volunteering him.
I DO Know that I have 30+ minutes of footage of him, shot from the crotch, (He was Unaware... It was TOTALLY Candid), sitting in his tent at the First VIR FJ G2G, just chatting about life, Music, Cars, etc, and I HOPE to get the Footage to his Funeral/Wake.

I just realized that the tape is 8mm, and unlabeled.
I only have a few 8mm tapes, BUT I have no 8mm player to confirm which tape is which.
If the family is interested, I will somehow track down a player to confirm the tape.

Wow... a friend just told me about this. Sad, truly sad indeed.

I met Gary about 4 years ago at Summit point. There was a focus up there racing, and he even camped in the same place that we did when we raced ( I race motorcycles ). He was under the big tree, just off the pavement.

We talked for most of the day on and off, I came to see him run ( and took a ride along once ) several times. We chatted on the phone several times and he invited my wife and I down to dinner if we ever were down that way. My wife, Carol, went to college near Gary. Anyway, I sure wish I would have taken him up on the offer for dinner.

I will miss him and his enthusiasm, as will many others I am sure. He always gave what he could and loved to see others share our love of racing. He had some great stories, some even better than mine.

If anyone has an address for a card. I ,as others, would sure appreciate it. Joe, if you have it, you can get it to me through Jeremy and Ian.

Rest in peace Gary.

Wow. Amazing. RIP GaryK. :(

Wow I remember the threads GaryK used to put up in motorsports sections. :( Man, what a year.

I once had the pleasure of riding with GaryK at Summit Point on the big track when he was instructing...I got quite a lesson from the passenger seat! I remember him firing up the stereo (yes, gutted interior, full cage, racing seats but you had to have tunes!) getting psyched up for his on track session. What a trip.

I remember him hoping curbs, was just laughing the whole time.

Thanks GaryK for all you taught us!!! I will have a beer in your memory!
