Hey guys, I've got a 04 Focus ZTS and I was just wondering how much mileage you guys normally get with your focus from a full tank?

It seems like its not getting its full potential, plus I just put on my winter tires and its getting a lot worse than it was before with the all seasons on.

Do you think the size of the tire makes a difference?

The size of the tire will make a difference on how far you think it goes, because the ODO will be off.

15" wheels and tires.
Before my engine/tranny blew I was getting 24mpg.
During my engine misfire I was getting 15mpg.
After my swap for a new engine/tranny I'm getting 25 mpg.
Seems pretty normal to me now.

What size of tire did you put on, and what did you have originally?

Brand of tire may make a difference, as well as the tire design. A lot of other items can affect gas mileage too, like your driving habits, and the gas you use.

I get about 25-28 MPG depending on how I drive ;) That's with stock 16's and stock tire size, my K&N intake kit helps me as well.

I had 16" stock all seasons, now I have 15" but with winter tires.

I was getting around 10-11KMS/L, now I'm getting around 8.5KMS/L (Is that normal?)

I drive pretty normal, I'm not speeding or flooring it or anything.
And I use Petro-Canada gas 87octane.
-Do you think I should use a higher octane now that the car is approaching 200,000kms?

I use Mobil Super 2000 5W-30 Oil every 5000kms

(I have to add I do 90% city driving rather than hwy)

thanks for your help guys!

On my 195/60/15 Triangle Talon GLS tires I get 28-31 in the City, thats with a little bit of spirited driving thrown in for good measure, and 38-42 on the highway.

I've been getting low 20s mixed lately and I'm lucky to break 30 using an entire tank of gas on freeway and taking it easy. 2005 hatch with 5 spd and 2.0L Duratec.

If your tire diameter is larger enough to noticeably slow your odometer, that's basically the same as effectively reducing final drive ratio which will affect your actual mileage for the better or worse. My odo reads about 1% less.

Check your odometer calibration with a GPS. It shouldn't be more than a few percent off, if that.

If you're doing mainly city driving, that sounds normal. With highway (consistent highway speed - not like a short jaunt across the 403 or 401 to cut across Mississauga), my car with 16's (BF Goodrich Super Sport All Seasons, and Toyo Proxes4) usually does the 8 L/100 km mark. With 17's (Toyo Proxes4), it's slightly more (between 8 and 8.4 L/100 km). With 15's winters, it's less (also maybe due to Michelins and Green X technology).

Don't forget other factors affect fuel economy, like your tire pressure, gas formulation (the gas used between summer and winter is slightly different), use of air conditioner, etc.

87 octane is good enough. There really isn't any need to run higher octane gas in your car unless there is an absolute need (like due to an engine tune or forced induction).

Oh and if your Focus has A/C, the compressor pumps refrigerant if you put the airflow into defog/defrost position and turn the fan on for dehumidification. It has the same effect on acceleration and mileage as using the A/C.
