yeah they changed the number on the wire leads too, there is now an "e" at the end.

How much were the plugs?

Sorry for the stupid question but.... what is wrong with the plugs that came with the headlights?

Also, there was a bag in my box that was full of random things that I haven't looked into... what is all that stuff in the bag?

NOTE: I have the Xenon HID version.

What do you mean by "what is wrong with the plugs that came with the headlights?" ?

The stuff in the bag is a rear LCA position sensor. If you install it, along with the harness that came with your headlights, the self leveling headlights **should** work. The lever sensor measures the position of the rear LCA and from that kows when there is weight in the back of the car and will adjust the headlight motors accordingly.

But what is "wrong" with the headlight plugs is they have European "VW Style" plugs on the back. The harness that came with the headlights will only plug into Euro headlight plugs, which you need to get from a VW dealer.

The "plugs", NOT the "headlight socket", that came with the headlights.

Yeah, I understand what your saying here, but I am not talking about the "VW Style" plug on the back of the headlight housing. I am referring to the "Euro headlight plugs" that came with the headlights.

The picture above shows the same plugs VW would give me, so why am I buying another set of "VW Style" plugs, if I already have a set? I can just cut these and wire them up like you have in the OP.

Your reply makes it seem like I just randomly posted in this thread about wiring the Hella's without actually giving me the benefit of the doubt that I actually know what the hell I am talking about.

I apologize for not having a more specific question, so I hope the picture helps with what I'm saying about using the plugs that came with the headlights.

The Xenons come with the extra harness. It's more than an extension harness, it is what you use to run back to the real LCA sensor so the self leveling headlight function works. But if you don't want to install the rear LCA sensor (I didn't) then the harness is not at all needed. The Dynabeam extension harness plugs into the AFS box, so it is needed.

Pro, you can use the Xenon extension harness plugs. This has been brought up somewhere, but I checked the GB's first post and I must have goofed and not added the information when it became available. IIRC Tobyboom posted the info up at some point. I will add it now. Sorry for any confusion out there.

Thank you.

The plugs that do not have the black goo sealing them up, cut it off and wire it into your car's wiring harness. You will have extra wires that you won't use though, don't worry about them.

But if you want to install the rear LCA sensor so your headlights have the "self-leveling" function, don't cut that harness; you'll have to buy another set of VW plugs to put on your car so you can plug the harness into your car and into the headlights.

I had absolutely no idea what you were asking, so I took my best shot at answering it :dunno:

What is "wrong" with them is it's a wiring harness designed to do something (make the self leveling feature work). You can cut the plugs off if you wish, I cut mine off, but it's not something that I, bustonit, or Hella would "recommend" and we take no responsibility for it if you do. It'll work though.

The picture definitely clears it up.

I was not aware the extension harnesses included in the Xenon kit were for the LCA sensor. Thanks for clearing that up.

Just an FYI the part number for the vw plugs has been updated to 6R0-973-735 although giving them the old part number wasn't a problem when I went.

Hey SVT3658, can you possibly update the original post to reflect updated part numbers so folks don't get confused? Newb's like me get confused easily!

For the Hella Dynabeams the Ground in pin 8 (for turn signals/parking lights) of the VW connector needs to go into pin 7.
Has this been verified? If so, can we update the original post with this info too for the same reasons as stated above? I just purchased the Dynabeams and won't be able to install them until August but when that time comes I won't have much time to redo everything if I do it wrong the first time.

Thanks. This is a sweet write up. It should be labeled "HOW TO: VW Wiring Hack FOR DUMMIES"! :D

Yep, those are them.

In the bottom statement, what kind of work goes into "install a jumper wire on pins #8 and #9 of the multifunction turn signal switch"?

This sounds like the "fix" to stop the low beam HIDs from shutting off when switching to high beams, correct?

...

You would be completely correct

You have saved me. I want to go to HIDs on my ST170 but the whole switching thing is the only reason i havent. THANK YOU THANK YOU

Anyone know what the difference is, if any, between these two wires?:

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/000979133/ES1009073/ (000979133EA - $6.30 EA)

and

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/000979133/ES1009072/ (000979133E - $8.01 EA)

Since I have to buy 6 of them, I'd rather get the $6.30 wires unless they WILL NOT work for this hack. I am headed back to the States on August 10th and will be installing my DynaBeams (FINALLY!!) and need to get my parts ordered up. I'm also ordering these harnesses:

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/000979133/ES1009072/ES1304803/

Let me know soon guys so I can get them ordered up. Thanks for the help!

Hmmmm I responded, my computer must have glitched and not sent it. Sorry about that.

They look identical, and the only difference in the part number is an extra letter at the end. Order the cheaper one, i see no reason why it wojt work
