I have an 03 SVT and was wondering what weight gear oil to put in it and if anyone had a brand that they trust and have a lot of luck with. I basically only want a good synthetic that will make shifting feel like butter and etc.

Go to the Ford dealer and ask for "Ford Honey." It's really high quality gear oil perfectly suited for the Getrag. It's pricey, but you should only be changing your fluid every 60k miles anyway unless it's a race car.

100k, 60k, whatever. A long interval. And some people are very particular about changing fluids more frequently than others. Guy I bought my car from would do brake fluid change every 10k, trans fluid every 10k, coolant every 5k, etc.

Was just throwing out the number so some unsuspecting person would understand its a longer interval than 60k and not get all worked up and worried.

I've used Mercon V fluid and it worked 100% fine, I don't use it anymore since I just go out and buy Royal Purple of some heavy weight and thickness I don't remember what the numbers are. Regardless of what these guys say Mercon V is perfectly fine don't stress out if thats what you buy or are planning to use, I ran it and the transmission is still solid and perfectly fine.

Why would they not choose to use said type of lube at the time of the design then?

See below

Ohh, man, I wish I would of saw this thread before my last post.

Don't take it personally. I'm just really good at playing devils advocate.
And I am NOT trying to get anyone riled up or upset. Just be aware of that.
And now that I think of it, is that why Power Steering Pumps requiring Mercon go to **** shortly after being filled with Power Steering Fluid by people that don't read their manuals? (Just an example)

Audi will bill you if they test their systems and find traces of other fluids than factory fluid in some warranty cases.

Ford used to use mercon in manual transmissions, the old Contour/Mystique MTX was one.

Guess what a huge seller is for old Contour/Mystique MTXs?

Synchros.

DO NOT PUT MERCON IN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION especially a Getrag and if you choose to use it in yours DO NOT suggest it to other people because it's the WRONG oil!

Sorry to have to yell but I wanted to be very, very clear on this.

There is really no reason not to use the Ford fluid in these transmissions. Yes that crap is expensive but it is worth it to not have to replace the trans due to a bad synchro which I just had to do last month.

$26 a bottle for good fluid or 1500 for a transmission swap.

What fluid were you using?! This is the first post with that type of information and could be nice for people to know.

My synchro damage was not caused by incorrect fluid. I was just stating the obvious.

Previous owner could not shift correctly as far as I can figure. Probably downshifted and grinded gears repeatedly.

So what I'm hearing is go with Ford Honey? Is their any specific weight that I should go with? Also what do you guys put in your power steering for fluid? I wanna be safe and not put Mercon in their if it's a bad fluid.
