I have an 03 SVT and was wondering what weight gear oil to put in it and if anyone had a brand that they trust and have a lot of luck with. I basically only want a good synthetic that will make shifting feel like butter and etc.

Go to the Ford dealer and ask for "Ford Honey." It's really high quality gear oil perfectly suited for the Getrag. It's pricey, but you should only be changing your fluid every 60k miles anyway unless it's a race car.

100k, 60k, whatever. A long interval. And some people are very particular about changing fluids more frequently than others. Guy I bought my car from would do brake fluid change every 10k, trans fluid every 10k, coolant every 5k, etc.

That's funny, same happened to me

I've used Mercon V fluid and it worked 100% fine, I don't use it anymore since I just go out and buy Royal Purple of some heavy weight and thickness I don't remember what the numbers are. Regardless of what these guys say Mercon V is perfectly fine don't stress out if thats what you buy or are planning to use, I ran it and the transmission is still solid and perfectly fine.

Ohh, man, I wish I would of saw this thread before my last post.

Don't take it personally. I'm just really good at playing devils advocate.
And I am NOT trying to get anyone riled up or upset. Just be aware of that.
And now that I think of it, is that why Power Steering Pumps requiring Mercon go to **** shortly after being filled with Power Steering Fluid by people that don't read their manuals? (Just an example)

Audi will bill you if they test their systems and find traces of other fluids than factory fluid in some warranty cases.

There is really no reason not to use the Ford fluid in these transmissions. Yes that crap is expensive but it is worth it to not have to replace the trans due to a bad synchro which I just had to do last month.

$26 a bottle for good fluid or 1500 for a transmission swap.

MotorCraft XT-M5-QS only comes in one weight. It's a 75-90. As said above - DO NOT use Mercon V. I'm currently using Amsoil Synthetic 75-90 Manual Trans Fluid - works like a charm. The local Ford stealerships charge about $28/qt for the MotorCraft stuff, and I pay $15/qt for the Amsoil.

5w30 Mobil 1. $25 for a 5-qt jug at WallyWorld. All the engine protection you'll ever need. If you can get Amsoil cheaper than that, I know lots of people that swear by the Amsoil European Car Formula 5w30 for high-revving 4 cyl engines.

A bit of controversy about Royal Purple Synchromax, but I've been running it for the last 38K miles (changing it once after 25K miles) and have been happy with it.

It totally had that "like butter" feel when I first added it at 56K, but that might have been the old butt dyno at work (after all, I'm convinced my car runs better on a full tank of gas, too).

Sweet deal on this thread. I was wondering what fluid to use. Fantastic. Now the question I have is just how thirsty are our Getrags? And no, I don't have a manual. Shoulda came in the sale, but didn't. And yes, I'm still a bit sore of it. haha

Oh, and Blinky, I swear I feel the same from my car on a full tank. My car just seems happier and more peppy with the acceleration with a full tank. I thought I was just weird...

Edit: Crap. I'm an idiot. Steve already answered my question on another thread. Apparently the Getrag takes about 2.1qt. Of course the tenth had to be there to make us buy 3 quarts...

I've been using RP in the trans of my svt. It's been great and shifts smooth for me. Hey Steve, what would you recommend for a second gen ford probe trans? I think I had some mobil syn atf in there. It shifts smooth and seems pretty decent, but I wasn't sure if this is a good idea to keep it in the trans? I think that's what was recommended when I looked it up on mitchellondemand.

yeah thats what kind we used when we done the tranny/clutch swap on my svtf. I use ROYAL PURPLE 5W30 FULLY SYNTHETIC (motor oil) . But, you can get the rear end oil in royal purple. You can get (it claims) 3-months or 15,000 miles out of the oil , before changing it but i usually change it every couple of months. One of my friends has me hooked on that royal purple kind but im also a big believer in mobile one (fully synthetic) . but id just listen to fordsvtparts, he's never told me a lie. try that tranny fluid.
