Ok folks...

Let me first start out by saying this is in NO WAY an attack on any dealer or brand of chip, it's just tuning information...so no bitching.

Bottom line...I was curious to see how 2 name brand chips fare against a custom chip.

Bottom-bottom line, I don't give a flying **** which brand is better or worse, just which gives the best performance gain. I am not brand loyal about any product (well...except computer parts, but I have to be, it makes my life and job easier).

Hopefully this will help everyone out when deciding which chip to purchase, or if they even want to purchase a chip.

All test were done back to back to back...no large gaps of time in between runs, and my car was fully warmed up and everything (I drove WELL over 100 miles before reaching Tom's shop).

Nothing was adjusted or removed during the testing process, with the exception of the various chips (being removed.

I literally showed up, chatted for a minute or two and it was all business from there.

Now to the goodies...

As I mentioned, 2 name brand chips were tested, as well as a custom tuned chip.

My car is basically stock, with a few bolt on's:

AFX UDP, MSD wires, Iceman Intake, K&N panel filter, and Magnaflow Exhaust

Results are as follows...

<drum roll please>

Stock programming (aka no chip)
Max Power=118.8 Max Torque=124.0

Run with chip "S"
Max Power=119.4 Max Torque=125.3

Run with chip "D"
Max Power=117.4 Max Torque=125.1

Run with Custom Chip
Max Power=120.1 Max Torque=125.7

I'll post scans of the sheets once I find my damn scanner.

i know for a fact that at least on the JFA8 ecu's, the new diablo x14 chip dynoed at a few extra HP, contact focussport for the detail, but they actually saw a few horses.

AGAIN: Its all nice and dandy that you have peak number figures, but what if the chip increased torque by 10ft/lb down low somewehre? On our cars, the chips mainly work in the lowend/midrange, so peak power levels are worthless to look at, dyno graphs would be really really really helpful. THnx for the info though.

See guys, im not always against chips

as posted PLEASE COME DOWN SO I CAN DO YOUR CAR ALSO

i work all day and we were on the dyno late last night so i did not answer you till this morning

next sat. bring your car and we will do the same test

we even let him drive the car ,as we will let you

tom

also to be fair

it did pick up in the bottom end but it was below 3300rpm discord is this correct

my biggest point to all this is you only need a chip if you have to change ,injectors, mass air ,etc

even the chip we did could not make much hp,because the stock computer does a good job of it

save you money ,

tom

I 'll be there Tom. It may be closer to 10am, though. I have a 3 hr drive.

Bear with me, I still can't find my scanner...and dammit, my apartment isn't that big, there's just too much stuff for this small of space. It's here somewhere...

well, i want a chip to remove the rev limiter and speed limiter with my coming mods.... no need for other uses of the chip at this point. i'll go with Diablo at this point.

Nice info. Thanks for sharing! Let's see those dyno graphs.

I can't say I'm surprised, it's kinda what I expected. It's good to see that we aren't expected to believe that a custom chip *magically* found big power over all the others.

One thing people have to consider: your car is basically stock.

The plug wires, and air filter have practically NOTHING to do with power. No effect whatsoever (would have been interesting to have you put the stock ones back on just so you can see). The exhaust is questionable too. Just a few hp. 2-3 max. Same deal with the intake.

And the UDP would not be affected by any chip programming at all. It's completely invisible to the chips.

That being said (your car is practically stock), people do have to realize that if your car was significantly modified, there would be power to be found with chips.

some one a while back only saw 2hp incrase w/ the diablo...I know the chip doesnt do much to help w/ you go WOT so its almost pointless at that point...but it did help at partial throttle as well. Remember its not all about dynos and numbers. Sometimes mods are done just to improve drivability....and i think the D-chip did just fine. So before we all get into a pissy fight over chips here i think we should step back and look at it. I know my diablo helped my car out because w/ the exhaust mods i've done i'd lost a bit o' low end TQ cause of the 2.5" piping. So the diablo kinda helped to pick that back up so im extreamely happy. Someone w/ 2" piping or a different ECU code might not have notticed the same gains. Remember to each his own....

I"m done

wow those are some sad gains for being a performance chip...So it would only be worth gettin a chip when you do heavy mods, such as headwork, larger injectors, or cams so you can raise the limiter and take full advantage

Is it possible that ECU Code LFQO is not compatible with a chip? I had one in and when I took it out I gained 2hp and 2ft/lb. My mods are Iceman w/K&N filter, FS street header, Random Cat, FS flexpipe, and Bosal exhaust.

Well I just got my Diablo chip from Cajun and installed it. I basically wanted it for removal of the rev limiter and hopefully the speed limiter. I took it out friday and I noticed the difference right away. I don't know if it was my mind, but throttle response seemed better and the best thing- the speed limiter was removed. I was concerned because my car is a 2002 model w/the LFQ1 code. So as far as the Diablo chip goes Mission Accomplished

Thanks Cajun.. db
