Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

...
If you look at the CFM site and read the part description they state that it is the Ford replacement part.
Heck, I e-mailed C-F-M and this is the scoop.

C-F-M:
"Hi! It is plastic but has a metal pin insert for reinforcement. It is the same piece they use to upgrade original broken factory pieces."

The question arises, is this obvious? Does the metal show through somewhere? It is rather reassuring to know that this may be a one-time repair and not a regular job.
I will take a closer look at the ones Ford is producing but I really didn't notice anything.

If there is a reinforcement it is well hidden.

Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

O.K. Then, I stand corrected.

I pulled the one off the shelf again this morning and looked a little closer.

The stud on the lever now as a tiny little roll pin inserted in a hole in the center of the stud.

So Yes, the new lever is upgraded from the stocker, The basic material appears to be the same but now the stud is reinforced (a little).

The roll pin does not go all the way through the lever but with any luck the pin will stop the new levers from failing.

Yeah, I'd still rather screw it and know that it is all metal holding that cable to it (well, at least to the plastic runner. But I don't forsee the screw coming out of the clip.)

Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

I am going to look at mine again to see if I was mistaken because mine looked stock but seemed to be entirely made out of metal

Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

When I first did the screw repair to mine I used a regular two part epoxy and a couple weeks ago I happened to glance at it and the screw was starting to pull out.

I simply pulled the screw the rest of the way out and reinstalled it using JB weld this time, I think this will be much more structurally sound.

Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

From the Metal DSI thread

This is the original part. It has a metal pin as you can see where the orange arrow is pointing. Once the plastic has been worn through a little and with constant heat, tension and repeated usage it’s no wonder this thing breaks.

No ford part was ever made out of all metal, and I think this is the same design from day one (the one with the pin in the plastic).

Nice pic, I wish I could get a closeup like that.

That is exactly what the replacement lever looks like 100%.

I don't recall my original having a hole in the stud for the roll pin, I thought it was flat.

If that is in fact what the originals looked like then the new replacements are EXACTLY the same.

I do have the complete intake in stock as well and I just opened one to look at the lever and the intake has that style lever on it, roll pin and all.

Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

The original part that I repaired at the beginning of this thread did not have a roll pin inserted.. it was just plastic. It looks like the pin in the replacement piece is an attempt to reinforce the the part that breaks off, but unless the pin goes all the way through and is anchored in some way to the clip itself, the post will continue to break off where it's attached to the clip. You know, ".. a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" thing.

It's possible that the first few were without the pin. The dealer that fixed the first part that broke on my car took the replacement from a same year car on their lot.

I asked them not to take the whole intake manifold off and only replace the broken part only. Both parts had the pin in them. I have a later build number in 2002 (4169) and this might be on early build cars, I could be wrong though.

Re: Another DSI Clip victim (yes, one of those Things That Break

My 03 had a plastic post with no metal to be found anywhere. When I replaced it, it was obviously not engineered to stand up to its intended use.

is holding up fine (thanks Steve), but I have a couple of the replacements (thanks again Steve!) just in case. Cheap insurance.
