I am in the market for a radar detector. Anyone have experience with the upper end range of detectors?

the V-1 does lose to the x50 in some independant reviews do to the fact that they are so close in performance and far away in price. the valentine will tell you where the signal is coming from, and proves to be a tiny bit quicker. so yeah technically it OWNS all. but think of the tickets you'd have to get to cover the costs! id say with a good head on your shoulders, and an x50, no tickets and 100$ in your pocket.

i am partially bias though, i own an x50. it has saved me from many cops on the highways. just a few weeks ago an explorer was going just enough faster to be a few car lentghs ahead and stay there for about 7 miles. x50 goes off, i slow they get a ticket. it's is a very good unit. and durable! mine falls from the windshield in the heat!

during college i drive 70miles one way there and back 2 days a week to work. all 4 lane highway. get the valentine if you want the all out best, but would you really be putting yourself in danger of a ticket if you didnt? prolly not.

velcro it to the dash

I thought i read some where that having it mounted on the dash can cause the signal to not go the full 360 degrees or somethin. if I plan on keeping the car for more than through the winter, ill have it hard wired in like i did the with the focus and have it all nicely mounted. for now it gets the glass!

Escort and V1 are both good, just note that Valentine sells direct and ONLY direct... you can't resell a V1 (it won't be warrantied and bulk buyers get no discount). Escort is sold by everyone and their mom. Half the websites hosted on the net talking about how great the Escort are... are well slightly biased by either being or being related to Escort resellers.

Thats the only problem with anonimity on the internet. Verify the source on all comparisons, especially if there is any link on that same site showing where one could buy an Escort if they were so inclined heh (or sometimes they are tricky and don't link out but on the selling website link into their own generated or endorsed comparison).

I have the Escort Passport 8500; I’ve had it for around 3 years and absolutely love it. I have gone through many radar detectors including the v1, I tried it and wasn't really satisfied and shipped it back to the factory.

The Passport has saved me numerous times.

I've got a BelTronics Vector995. It's been a great detector an all accounts. I have absolutely no complaints. Also, I believe it is a little more compact than the V1, and a little easier to mount in strange locations...

Review = 5thumbs up

When I attended the start of the Cannonball One Lap of America 2 years ago (I'll will be there again this year) the ONLY detector I saw in any car was the V1. Draw your own conclusions. And NO Valentine did not sponsor the event or the individual participants.

I've probably owned more detectors (including several generations of Escort products) and have been using them longer (my dad and I built our first one from a kit in the 70s) then anyone here and I choose the V1 hands down.

Don't cheap out. The V1 is an investment. Plus they will always upgrade your detector for you in the future rather then trying to sell you the "new model". Figured over a lifetime, the V1 is actually cheaper.

8500 X50, saved me 3x within the first 48 hrs of having it in my STi. If you need an arrow to tell you where a signal is coming from, your not looking out hard enough.....
What kind of sense does that make?

That's like saying "if you need a radar detector to tell you there's a cop car, you're not looking out hard enough..."

The V1 not only tells you direction, but the amount of seperate radar signals. So if you're heading down the highway and John Law has got a radar up ahead and one following behind you don't think "Ok, well I'm past the one in front so now I can speed up again... Whoops!"

I could not have said it any better then that.

The V1. And don't velcro it to the dash, or attach it to the dash in any other way. It's gotta be up where it can "see" 360 degrees.

I got the direct-wire attachment, and wired it to the sunroof connector (it's a tiny power draw, and you're supposed to wire it to an ignition-switched source, not a hot one), so I just have the tiny telephone-type connector (that's what Valentine uses) on a short little wire coming out between the headliner and windshield. I just stick the V1 to the windshield, plug in the connector, and I'm ready to roll.

The upgrade policy Valentine uses is the absolute best, too. No planned obsolesence.

I think you are misrepresenting the V1 upgrade. You should probably include most major upgrades come with a price tag of around $200. How do I know this? 5 minutes of research on the internet. I believe the latest upgrade for the POP protection was about $190. For that you could have just bought yourself 3/4 of another detector, or paid for 1 speeding ticket (well 1 in Oregon, maybe more elsewhere).

Obviously the V1 does a few more things that others won't, but you're getting at least 90% of the V1 for 60% of the cost with the x50.

Could you link please? I don't have my father's older V1 serial code available.

Are you sure you aren't trying to upgrade a 1992 V1 to the latest? The pricing depends on how old your V1 is and how many updates are required. If you can't find any, I'll post the price tonight.

why noone saying anything bout the k40 the one they had on a focus around here was 1200 bux and they will pay your ticket up to 15mph over but 1200 bux installed is kinda steep its nice to not have anything on your window, only 3 lil LEDs
