Big Farking rock

Nevermind the fact that driving down Tulsa's roads is basically the same as getting a shiatsu massage from a rhinoceros with Parkinson's thanks to all the bumps and bone-jarring bumps, the short commute to work is also more or less the same as trying to sneak through a prison shower naked, no matter how hard you try to avoid the bad spots; your still going to get pounded. Damm big farking rock. Naturally I was trying to avoid one bad spot in the road when I found a small hat-sized rock in another, which leaves both a very pissed-off Jimmy and my steering wheel slightly pointed to the left. Thanks to my superb story-telling along with the modern miracle of MS-Paint, I'm able to show you exactly what happened in agonizing detail....

"La la la...driving to work."

"Ah crap, massive pothole! No problem, I'll steer around it."

"Ah crap! I avoided the pothole and found a Big Farking Rock...oh no Mister Bill!!"

Naturally I stopped, and while I can't see any damage to the body of my car or the rim itself, my steering wheel is definitely a inch to the left now while I'm going straight...so I've got a date with an alignment in the next couple of days. This just pisses the poo right out of me, particularly since I was trying to avoid a smaller pothole and managed to find a big farking rock!

you probably bent your damper.
Then lets pray your wrong, because that would certainly piss the hell out of me. How would I check for this?

Well Phacade came over to my place today and we checked out his car.

As soon as he pulled in, I could EASILY see the lower stance and massive amount of negative camber in his driver's front wheel.

We jacked up the car and took the front wheel off. That's when we could see this damage on the front of the wheel:

And this on the back:

I looked at the strut and couldn't see anything totally wrong until we took it off. First, the plastic part that secures the dust boot over the cylinder had shattered into pieces. It was falling out of the dust boot as I moved the strut. Apparently he hit the rock with so much force that it compressed the strut all the way into the bump stop and crushed that piece upon impact.

Then with the strut off I could see the damage:

Where the wheel was rubbing the strut after impact:

And the bend where the strut enters the control arm seat:

After calling Doug, walls2004, and asking to use his old stock Focus strut until Jimmy could get a new Eibach one, we drove into Tulsa to pick it up from his brother's house, then back out to Claremore. A quick rent of a spring compressor and the bent strut was replaced with a straight one, plus we swapped his bent wheel with the rear wheel which was straight AND installed his new MOOG sway bar endlinks.

Now his car is driving straight once again with a straight steering wheel.

Oh, and thanks to Doug for letting us use his old strut until Jimmy can get a new one.....that saved him at least $60 for now!

Driving MUCH better now in fact. Steering wheel appears straight again and feels much like its old self again. You can see in the picture there where my wheel was rubbing against the strut. I thought I had a camber issue, but your mind plays tricks on you and you try to pretend it does exist.

The only odd thing that remains, beyond having to pick up another Eibach and figuring out where to get my wheel straightened, is the slight bump I'm still feeling when I fist start out. Occasionally if I shift hard, I'll feel it in 2nd and 3rd as well.

Could be the difference in struts (regular ZX3 on drivers side and Eibach Pro on passenger side, perhaps ball joint, or steering rack...maybe strut bearings. We'll see when I get my replacement Eibach.

Oh and Ray? You totally called it.
